What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a manager to lead the Z Machine Infrastructure & Operations Department (1672). This department resides in the Z Experimental Capability Management Group within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center and supports a diverse breadth of experimental research, development, and applications in support of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) Stockpile Stewardship Program.This department is responsible for operation and stewardship of Z's pulsed power & infrastructure systems. The pulsed power system consists of Marx Generators which store over 20 million Joules of energy, Intermediate stores and pulse forming lines, including the 6.2 MV laser triggered gas switches. These components are reconfigured and inspected after each Z experiment. In addition, this position also includes the management of key facility infrastructures: over 1,000,000 million gallons of oil and water that are filled/drained daily, SF6 and CDA gas delivery systems, and crane, rigging, and fall protection for the functions of this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Management of the personnel in the organization by fostering a diverse work environment and ensuring a culture that promotes safety and security.
  • Recruitment, selection, training, performance assessment, and work assignments of personnel in the organization.
  • Leading the organization with sustainable impact through a common vision, staff development, and strong teaming with collaborators.
  • Developing strategies with other departments to utilize advance analytics to improve the reliably / predictive maintenance of the Z facility.
  • Management of activity level work in the Z Facility.
  • Manager on Call. The Manager on Call acts as the primary manager of Z operations associated with tasks and facility needs that can impact shot execution during typical Z daytime operational hours (i.e., 6 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) plus 8 or more years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of STEM education and experience
  • Eight years of relevant technical experience
  • Experience with activity-level work in a laboratory setting with high voltage systems
  • Leadership experience as demonstrated by serving as a project manager, principal investigator, or prior management experience
  • Active DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Minimum of two years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships and partnerships among peers, staff, management, and partners.
  • Experience developing and implementing organizational strategies
  • Detailed knowledge of Sandia safety and security policies and demonstrated ability to efficiently execute work while following required procedures.
  • Experience in developing and executing maintenance programs.

The Z Facility R&D Group (1670) is the backbone of the world's most powerful pulsed power facility which creates unique High Energy Density physics environments and record above-ground radiation sources. The departments create scientific, engineering, and technical solutions to realize efficient operations, cutting edge diagnostics, and new subsystems and infrastructure to advance and steward the Z facility. Through an adaptive, agile and collaborative workforce, highly complex and integrated experiments are performed almost daily that meet stockpile stewardship objectives, advance the frontiers of science, and visibly contribute to the US nuclear deterrent. The Z Machine Infrastructure & Ops Department (01672) and Z Pulsed Power Systems (01672-1) are responsible for ensuring that Sandia's Z Machine is ready and configured to support the nation's High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) stockpile stewardship and other national security missions as the world's most powerful pulsed power driver. This team works together to prepare the machine for daily operation according to the requested experiment specifications and ensure that all the pulsed power and supporting systems are maintained. This team's scope includes the Oil & Water systems, the SF6 systems, the Vacuum systems, the Energy Storage Section, the Pulse Forming Section, the Laser Triggered Switches, the Control Monitor & Data Acquisition Systems, Cranes, Rigging, Fall Protection, Mechanical Repairs, and Electrical Safety. This team is highly adaptable and dynamic because of the developmental nature of many of the experiments, and the fact that Z supports Materials Science, Radiation Physics, and Fusion experiments which all have unique needs and requirements. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
