Miami Nursing Jobs Trainees Have New Option

Dade Medical College recently opened a new campus in Hollywood, the school’s first campus in Broward County. About 20 students began attending the school in February, but DMC hopes to enroll some 500 students by the end of the year.
According to an article by The Miami Herald, the new campus has 10 classrooms and four labs in a 16,000-square-foot space. This is DMC’s fourth location, in addition to campuses in downtown Miami, Hialeah and Homestead.
Although several colleges and technical schools in the area already offer programs in various medical fields, many have long waiting lists, making the new campus a near-necessity.
The Hollywood campus is currently offering six programs. Students can earn a diploma or associate degree in diagnostic cardiac sonography, diagnostic medical ultrasound, medical assistant or massage therapy, or an associate degree in general radiologic technology or healthcare management.
DMC also plans to apply for licensing that would allow the new campus to offer a practical nursing diploma program and an associate degree in nursing, both of which would prepare students to take the exam to become a registered nurse.
The college’s three other locations already offer that nursing program. Students should be able to complete a diploma program within a year and an associate program within one to two-and-a-half years.

Jobs in Durham NC Get Federal Funds for Training

A new round of training courses will help prepare students for jobs in Durham NC.
Durham Technical Community College recently launched JobsNOW, a series of short-term training programs designed to meet local employer needs. The program is funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
JobsNOW will offer training sessions throughout nine separate areas. The sessions are designed to be completed within six months or less and are intended to get students into the workforce quickly.
“Shorter term training seems to be the key to getting retooled and allowing people to begin new careers,” JobsNOW Program Coordinator Kelly King told The Herald-Sun. “This is for people who need to find work faster, and need to find the type of training that will accommodate their schedules.”
Durham Tech began offering JobsNOW programs during the fall of 2009. The sessions have since proved popular, with a training course in phlebotomy filling in only 20 minutes.
A total of 138 students have enrolled in various courses so far, and of the students involved in courses that have already been completed, more than 50 percent have already found jobs.
Some of the new training sessions available include auto detailing, biomanufacturing process technician, and emergency medical technician basic training. Second editions of fall courses also will be offered.
Durham Tech was able to offer the new round of JobsNOW programs after it received $84,600 in unused federal stimulus funding from the state community college system. The funding had been designated for other community colleges to offer JobsNOW programs, but those schools were unable to offer those programs.
“We had to get moving very quickly,” King said. “We’ve had just over a month to apply for the money, decide what we wanted to do, establish all our programs, find instructors and open for registration. It’s been very busy.”

  • Have Veteran Recruitment Appointment eligibility – You must be a disabled veteran; a veteran who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized; or participated in a military operation for which an Armed Forces Service Medal was awarded while serving on active duty in the Armed Forces; or a recently separated veteran.
  • Be a documented 30-percent disabled veteran – You must have served in the military, be able to produce proof of service and disability, and have a service-connected disability of 30 percent or more.
  • Have reinstatement status – You must be a former career or career-conditional federal civil service employee.

Summer positions are temporary appointments scheduled to end October 2, and not all bases will be offering summer positions. Depending on the type of position, a physical exam may be required prior to being hired.

These reports are increasingly becoming a part of employee background checks. Just as with most aspects of background checks, the Fair Credit Reporting Act dictates what consumer reports an employer can access.
By now you’re probably wondering, “What can an employer find out about me in my background check?” Aside from the information included in regular background checks, consumer reports can include those about you made to employers, insurance companies, banks and landlords.
The companies that compile such reports have been dubbed as “nationwide specialty consumer reporting agencies.” Aside from credit history, these agencies can compile reports on your medical conditions, residential or tenant history and evictions, check writing history, employment background checks, and homeowner and auto insurance claims.
According to an article by the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, these agencies operate much like credit bureaus, and can collect information regarding: public records of criminal or civil cases, your credit history, bankruptcy filings, companies with which you have an existing or prior business relationship, medical information, and driving records.
The agencies then use this information to compile reports based on the requirements of targeted uses, such as insurance companies, employers and landlords. While most people don’t know if specialty consumer reports exist about them or not, you do have the right to request one report about yourself each year.
Luckily, the FCRA imposes certain obligations on specialty reporting agencies, those who use the reports, and those who furnish the information that goes into compiling the reports.
