Graduate Student Worker - Technology Accelerator for Commercialization

The University of Cincinnati’s tech-transfer and startups functions are now part of a new Office of Innovation, and moving into the University’s new 133,000 square foot 1819 iHub. Part of our mission is to ignite a thriving uptown innovation corridor, populated with large corporate partners, fast-moving startups, and curated access to student and faculty talent. The Technology Accelerator for Commercialization is currently recruiting for a  Grdauate Student Worker. This position will introduce the student to the business-side of transferring inventions from the lab to the marketplace.  It will enable students to combine their science background with training and experience in the field of academic technology transfer – a complex business of technology valuation, patenting, marketing, licensing and policy.

 

Working with UC’s technology licensing managers, this position will focus on screening and evaluating technology disclosures to help determine the invention’s commercialization potential.  Assigned tasks include:

 

  • Technology assessment
  • Developing patenting strategies
  • Marketing UC technologies
  • Writing non-confidential summaries
  • Introduction to licensing and negotiating practices
  • Reviewing contracts
  • Monitoring technology development
  • Technology transfer policy

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • Enrolled at a post-secondary institution or a secondary school
  • Appointed as a Co-op Student, student Worker or Work study Student
  • Enrolled at least part-time (one or more credit hours if at a post-secondary institution), with the exception of summer term, or will be a registered student during the next academic term;

 

“Enrollment” shall include:

  • The period between two successive terms for which the student is enrolled.
  • The one “off” term in each academic year in which the student is no enrolled. Student employee status may be retained for one additional term following either graduation or withdrawal from enrollment. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • UC Student actively pursuing a graduate level science degree, MBA or JD, with an interest in Intellectual Property and a technical background
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Preferred Knowledge

 

Students who have completed or are enrolled in intellectual property and/or patent courses.

This position is a paid, part-time role with no benefits.  Students will work approximately 20 hours per week during a traditional academic semester, with the potential for up to 40 hours during the summer based on scheduling needs.
