General Summary

Under minimal supervision, is responsible for ensuring all electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety equipment within VSP Global’s numerous campuses, labs, and data center are operating properly.  Ensure completion of planned preventative maintenance of equipment, daily corrective work, and emergency response to emergent issues.  This job will also manage large, complex facilities projects. 

Essential Functions

Responsible for the overall operation, maintenance, and modification of all building systems including but not limited to:  mechanical (including HVAC and plumbing), electrical, cabling, fire detection & suppression, life safety, lighting, temperature control systems, building management systems, and digital systems


Plans and implements the layouts of plant, office, and production equipment in order to provide the maximum utilization of facilities and efficiency of production


Develops annual capital improvement plans which includes planning for infrastructure updates, equipment replacements and building modification to ensure the building’s future capabilities are maintained


Develops specifications and prepares detailed estimates of design costs including equipment, installation, labor, materials, preparation, and other related costs

Forms criteria and performance specifications for facilities and equipment necessary to meet unique operating requirements and building and safety codes 


Ensure all infrastructure, compliance, and regulatory documentation for the building are maintained and up to date


Responsible for overseeing the activities of contractors working within the building as either representatives of the building itself or tenants operating within the buildings


Provide detailed reports on equipment utilization and records for internal use as well as state and federal agencies.  Owns the development of maintenance standard operating procedures to effectively document processes and procedures


Identifies safety hazards within the building and incorporates the remediation of such hazards to ensure that the building’s staff and occupants work in a safe environment.  Implements, administers, and manages the safety training program


Inspects Facilities on an ongoing basis to determine the effectiveness of operations and maintenance programs and equipment


Acts as an internal consultant providing technical guidance on most complex projects providing technical input and support, including construction support, commissioning, and final acceptance, as applicable  


Assists the Facilities Manager in oversight of VSP Facilities maintenance needs, including priorities and budget planning


Assists with planning, budgeting, implementing, managing, and commissioning sustainability efforts and other sustainable projects


Responds to operational and emergency situations and provides technical guidance and direction during real time problem management

Job Specifications

Typically has the following skills or abilities:


Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Engineering  or related field or equivalent experience


Minimum 8 years of experience as an engineer, with strong working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire suppression systems


Minimum 5 years of experience working at an advance programming level with computer based Building Automation Systems (BAS)


Minimum 5 years of building systems project management


Minimum 5 years of experience as a Chief Engineer in Data Center operations with a strong understanding of electrical and mechanical systems in use of central plant environments


Strong knowledge of transformers, generators, switchgear, UPS systems, ATS & ASTS units, PDU units, chillers, cooling towers, CRAC/CRAH units required


Minimum 5 years working at an administrator/programming level or a computer maintenance management system (CMMS)


Certification in EPA CFC Clean Air Section 608 Universal HVAC


Ability to act as a mentor and/or technical expert for the team and business partners


Strong understanding of Federal, State, and local law regulatory compliance


Proven ability to navigate complex situations through organizational landscape and with multiple stakeholders


Ability to drive results through informal authority, serve as a consultant to key business partners, and represent users and customers in every thought and interaction


Proven ability to successfully manage risks/issues at a program level


Ability to elicit cooperation from Senior Management and other departments


Demonstrates ability to be a decision-maker showing balanced consideration of business issues


Excellent written and verbal communication skills and analytical skills


Strategic skills to support envisioning work, program planning and forecasting


Ability to regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment the in performance of his/her job duties.


    Preferred Skills

    Conduct inspect power/cooling systems to identify and fix flaws that may be detrimental to network performance


    Monitor the environmental conditions of a data center to ensure they are optimum for servers, routers, and other devices

    Working Conditions / Physical Demands

    The working environment is generally favorable.  Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust etc.  They will work in areas that are outside the normal office environment such as the roofs and equipment rooms that can be noisy.
