R&D Manager I / II


About the role:

We are seeking either internal or external candidates for a Manager I/II position within the IC R&D to continue to grow The Center of Excellence (COE) of Pharmaceutical Sciences Group. In Interventional Cardiology (IC) we design, develop, and produce technologies for diagnosing and treating coronary artery disease and other cardiovascular disorders. The Pharma COE is a critical group within the IC R&D with a strong track record providing innovations in drug delivery and polymer technology for combination product development. The group is currently extending the innovations into new or high-growth markets such as peripheral intervention, men’s health, and cancer treatment. The Manager of the group will lead a group of highly talented staff and continue to support product commercialization and technology development across multiple Divisions. This R&D Manager will be responsible for the following:

  • Drive functional excellence in R&D by providing coaching and mentoring on product development best practices.
  • Outline and support R&D activities on critical projects spanning across product development, technology development and exploratory work for multiple business franchises.
  • Establish network and build relationships within R&D community across all BSC Divisions and geographic sites.
  • Hire and developing world-class staff to provide technical leadership for diverse R&D projects.


Your responsibilities include:

  • Grow center of excellence in drug delivery, formulation development, polymer/material technology, and interfacial sciences to support technology and product development of minimally invasive medical products.
  • Drive development of creative solution or novel technology to advance BSC’s R&D competency.
  • Provide guidance regarding technical strategies and approaches on product and technology development projects.
  • Take an active role in the organization to identify and mitigate issues; works cross-functionally to resolve issues and challenges.
  • Partner with pre-clinical, clinical and other R&D members in a cross-functional and multidisciplinary environment.
  • Determine appropriate staff levels, schedules and resources to support product or technology development projects.
  • Recruit and develop a high quality staff; mentor direct reports to develop career plan and path to achieve career goals.
  • Drive or lead exploratory, technology and product development activity.


What we’re looking for:

Minimum Qualifications

  • Advanced degree with 5+ years of work experiences or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science background is highly desirable.
  • Proven technical leadership in medical device or healthcare related industry
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • An independent critical thinker; willingness to challenge status quote
  • Ability to guide/lead other team members and build effective cross-functional relationships


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with implantable medical device product development. Experience related to combination products
  • Proven success with launched commercial products or technology transfer
  • Understanding of risk management tools and requirements for medical device product development.
  • Ability to interface with customers to gather insight
