Position Description

The Post Autoclave Design Engineer will work on designing new Fiber Cement manufacturing equipment and improving the performance of existing equipment which includes all types of material handling equipment with a specific focus on panel / sheet handling, coatings application and mixing, saw and sanding equipment, and packaging equipment. This position is responsible for all Mechanical and some Electrical / Controls equipment components and systems. In order to be effective in this role the person will need to be capable of performing detailed engineering work in both disciplines. This individual should be capable of working independently, balancing multiple projects, and working with and coordinating outside vendors.


Position Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the design of post-autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment which will include supervision of mechanical design and major equipment selection, including material handling equipment, conveyors, on loading and stacking, coating application, coating mixing and prep, saw and sanding systems, and packaging equipment.  Additional responsibilities include supervision of structural design, including building modification, foundations and slabs, access platforms, equipment and crane support structures associated with Post -Autoclave equipment in collaboration with the construction team.  


Additionally, you will work with the Corporate EH&S Group to prepare operating and environmental permits, as well as ensure all equipment meets OSHA safety requirements, and supervise the creation of Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), Process Flow Diagrams and Line Maps to help determine process bottlenecks and design capacity for Post-Autoclave equipment. Recommend electrical power distribution equipment including transformers, switchgear, disconnects, and motor control centers based on equipment design


You will develop specifications for the purchase of mechanical equipment and systems including process equipment, material handling equipment, complex machinery, fluid systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, and high pressure water), material conveyance systems, dust collection systems, storage silos, tanks, pumps, and valves. Additionally, you will provide support to the Construction Team in the procurement of specialized equipment as required, lead equipment design review meetings between Vendors and the Construction Team, R&D, and manufacturing personnel and coordinate design decisions between Vendors.


Additional Responsibilities

  • Develop installation scope of work for mechanical equipment and systems, buildings, foundations, platforms and structures
  • Assist Construction Teams as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) during mechanical system checkout, equipment startup, and turnover to plant for Post- Autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment
  • Prepare overall project estimate, implementation schedule, and Capital Expenditure Request for management review
  • Scale up of process design as required for production (i.e. size tanks and pumps, determine flow rates, throughputs, etc.)
  • Prepare Request for Quotes (RFQs) for Post-Autoclave fiber cement manufacturing equipment
  • Utilizing sound engineering judgment, solicit quotations for installation or estimate costs
  • Solicit quotations for equipment or estimate pricing using recent purchases
  • Review proposed design with plant Operations, Maintenance, and Safety
  • Supervise preparation of equipment arrangement and P&ID drawings
  • Work with Construction Teams to procure bids and award contracts
  • Evaluate utility requirements and determine availability
  • Prepare mechanical equipment lists


  • Ensure Project Close Out Documentation is archived and available to the Plant Manufacturing Team

                        this will include as-built drawings, OEM operation manuals, OEM maintenance manuals, and                               functional descriptions at a minimum


Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of Mechanical Building Codes, with specific emphasis on how they affect equipment design
  • Basic familiarity with the installation and programming of Allen Bradley OR Siemens PLC Systems, and Wonderware HMI software
  • Advanced familiarity and able to work in AutoCAD drawing software including the ability to view and print drawings and make changes ~ advanced drawing skills are preferred
  • Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to relate well and cooperate with others to effectively coordinate activities and accomplish goals
  • Demonstrated ability to show initiative, work independently, and perform at a high level with little or no direct supervision
  • Demonstrated skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet Explorer
  • Well organized, able to multi-task, as well as lead and be a part of cross functional teams
  • Knowledge of National Electric Code (NEC)


  • Knowledge of Equipment and Machine Design Standards and Specifications including AWS, ANSI, and ASTM (preferred)
  • Knowledge of applicable OSHA standards for industrial equipment (preferred)
  • Knowledge of database systems for process control applications (preferred)



The Post-Autoclave Design Engineer uses professional experience and accepted best practices to oversee the design and installation of mechanical components and systems in a manner consistent with current plant standards. He/She should also poses the skills required to analyze and evaluate existing mechanical systems and recommend improvements which will enhance overall plant equipment reliability and efficiency.


This is a very “Hands On” position. To be considered, the candidate will need to demonstrate the ability to perform the above tasks on his/her own including the ability to supervise other engineers, consultants, or vendors performing the same tasks.


Education/Experience required


Bachelor of Science Degree in a Technical Engineering discipline required ~ advanced degree preferred


  • 7+ years experience in an industrial manufacturing environment (sheeted process systems such as paper, steel, gypsum is preferred)
  • 5+ years experience designing utility and process piping system, this should include tanks, pumps, valves, fittings and in line components, and pipe support systems
  • 5+ years experience designing mechanical systems including Hydraulics, Pneumatics, High Pressure Water, Compressed Air, and Natural Gas
  • 5 + years experience designing complex machinery, mechanical equipment, or processes


  • Experience working with process control system instrumentation BOTH digital and analog
  • Experience in an industrial manufacturing maintenance department is highly desirable
