Purpose of Role:

 

This position is responsible for reporting and accounting for futures trading for multiple Mars units on the NYC, Chicago, and London terminal markets.  The Global Commodities Analyst is accountable for calculating hedging P&L and balance sheet impacts. Responsibilities include analysis of commodities hedging gains & losses, and forecasting P&L impact.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Calculates and issues commodities cover and performance for U.S. and UK Cocoa and Dairy, and all other U.S. hedged and non-hedged commodities, including U.S. Federal holidays during which Mars units are open for business (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day & Friday after).
  • Calculates and issues commodities cover for natural gas and diesel transactions, including options, to Confectionery U.S, Petcare U.S., and Food U.S. businesses.
  • Completes analysis of weekly demand reports for European and AsiaPac Chocolate business units, covering cocoa and dairy (butter/skim milk).
  • Acts as business partner to cocoa buyers, including forecasting anticipated demand changes.
  • Completes ad hoc financial analysis of commodities hedging impacts.
  • Proactively addresses issues and recommends opportunities for improvement.
  • Partners with Commercial on the information needed to forecast hedging gains and losses, provides needed information to FP&A for Planning and Revs. Also coordinates and reviews demand forecast for UK and U.S. Commercial partners.
  • Complete special projects as identified each year to meet annual objectives (system implementation scheduled for 2018-2020).
  • Responsible for booking and maintaining GL accounts regarding hedging gains and losses, deferred gains and losses, and broker payable/receivable at period close along with the subsequent reporting and analysis related to all commodities hedging P&L.
  • Maintain an adequate internal control environment.  Highlight deviations from the internal control framework and make recommendations to Commercial & Finance management.

 

Context and Scope:

 

  • The role currently operates among several different systems, compiling and analyzing data within Excel. This role will be imperative to the global commodities system implementation (Allegro) and will require the flexibility and technical skills to ensure compliance to financial reporting standards while meeting business reporting requirements.
  • Strong communication skills are important in building effective working relationships.  Maintaining good relationships with outside brokers, Bank back office personnel, and Commercial traders are critical and ensures problems will be resolved in a timely manner.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 5+ years accounting experience
  • Understanding of general accounting concepts; knowledge of debits/credits, assets/liabilities, Balance Sheet and P&L
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with an attitude high in customer service
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills including the ability to interpret financial information
  • Intermediate or greater Microsoft Excel skills
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Word, Access, Power Point, and SAP
  • Project Management experience preferred
