    The Alaska VA Healthcare System (AVAHS) is a complexity level 3 facility serving Veterans throughout Alaska. The parent facility is in Anchorage and we manage four VA Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), located in Fairbanks (358 miles north of Anchorage), Kenai (158 miles south of Anchorage), Wasilla (41 miles north of Anchorage) and Juneau (569 air miles from Anchorage). Anchorage has no income or sales tax and offers all the modern amenities expected, including shopping, dining, cultural opportunities, entertainment, and public transportation. Hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating, skiing, climbing, golf, tennis, recreational leagues and wildlife photography are all pursuits available in or near Anchorage.

    Responsibilities

    The Psychiatrist is accountable for the delivery of primary psychiatric care to patients including psychopharmacologic treatment as well as individual and group therapy. The Psychiatrist will collaborate with the Psychiatric Health Care Team to enhance the delivery of care to eligible patients (adult to geriatric age) in accordance with individual patient needs, using social and behavioral health protocols as general guidance. Incumbent may be required to provide coverage for various clinics in the Alaska VA Healthcare System such as Anchorage Outpatient Ambulatory Clinic, JV Hospital, Domiciliary and CBOCS. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Performs a comprehensive patient assessment, including history, physical, and mental status examinations, an evaluation of deviations from the normal;

  • Develops and initiates a plan of care based on data collected and DSM-V diagnoses;

  • Orders and evaluates pertinent screening and diagnostic tests, including laboratory testing, ECG, and neurologic testing;

  • Collaborates with other health disciplines to ensure continuity of patient care;

  • Provide care via tele-mental health;

  • Provides health teaching to patients and families;

  • Authority to prescribe and dispense legend drugs including Suboxone and other medication assisted therapies for SUD.

    Please Note: This position will remain open until filled.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, from 8:00 a.m.- 4:30 p.m. Some evenings, weekends and on-call responsibilities may be required. Flexible schedules may be considered.

    Qualifications
    Basic Requirements:
    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

    Preferred Experience: The Psychiatrist is an independent care provider who is highly skilled in the evaluation and treatment of mental health needs.
