Job Summary:
Represents the Chief Nursing Officer/Directors of Nursing with on-site operational and clinical leadership after normal business hours. Ensures administrative continuity to staff, patients, and families while acting as a liaison for the hospital executive director on call and the patient care services management team. Is aware of and responds to activities occurring within the entire house during assigned work hours. Works in conjunction with physicians, hospital staff, and departments to prioritize admissions to the most appropriate bed available, based upon medical necessity and admission criteria. Communicates with all departments, as appropriate, to maximize efficiency and to expedite the admission, transfer and discharge processes. Acts independently to provide crisis management, interpret policy, and make timely decisions that directly impact patient care. Serves as the administrative liaison to patients, families, WFUBMC employees, and external customers.
Education / Experience:
- RN with BSN from an accredited school of nursing, MSN or Masters in related field required.
- BCLS required.
- Three (3) years acute care (Emergency, Medical-Surgical, or Critical Care) nursing experience and three (3) years supervisory or leadership experience required.

Licensure, Certification and / or Registration:
- Active NC RN Licensure, Certification required within one year of hire.
Essential Functions:
- Clinical Staffing: In collaboration with Nursing Management and Nursing Staffing Office provides primary leadership in the appropriate placement of nursing staff for staffing decisions during assigned hours.
- Analysis: Analyzes trends in utilization of resources and recommends changes to Nursing Director and/or Nurse Manager.
- Patient Throughput: Provides consultation to ensure appropriate and timely placement of patients in conjunction with the Admitting Office, Bed Management, Clinics and patient care areas. Coordinates and conducts Daily Debriefings including week-ends and holidays. Initiates decision to escalate capacity management plan when necessary and communicates this information accordingly.
- Collegiality: Collaborates with physicians, nurses and ancillary staff to resolve clinical/operational issues. Teams with Hospitalists in a co-management model to facilitate communication and throughput within the organization.
- Practice/Accountability: Serves as a resource for policies, standards, and performance issues. Provides disciplinary counsel as appropriate and communicates to the Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Director as appropriate.
- Quality Patient Care: Serves as a resource for patient care quality, compliance and regulatory standards. Initiates action for resolution and notifies Nurse Manager and/or Nursing Director for follow up.
- Communications: Serves as on-site liaison for Hospital Administrator on-call. Provides information to the Office of Communications Marketing and Media regarding patients or situations of interest to the media.
- Service Excellence: Communicates in an effective, positive and professional manner, role modeling behaviors congruent with Caring Science. Serves as on-site liaison for resolution of Service Excellence issues.
- Work Place Environment: Ensures a biogenic environment which stimulates the ongoing professional development of staff in accordance with the principles of Shared Governance, Caring Science, and professional practice. Develops and fosters relationships that support the continuous enhancement of care delivery, and patient and staff satisfaction through a professional practice environment of mutual respect.
- Environment of Care: Ensures that the hospital disaster plans and policies are followed throughout the hospital and coordinates activities as needed.

Provides leadership, coordination, and support for the patient care unit for a defined shift. Responsibilities include accountability for the quality of care delivery, patient progression, service excellence, and workplace experience.
