Summit Credit Union, voted a top work place, has an exciting opportunity to join our growing team as a Learning & Development Specialist - Leadership Empowerment & Sales Development within our Cottage Grove HQ location. Under the direction of the VP, L&D, this individual will work closely with L&D management and colleagues, HR partners, and educators across the organization. Primary responsibilities include:
• Leadership and sales course facilitation and coordination;
• Mentor development;
• Project and consulting support related to leadership, sales and change initiatives, and
• Design e-learning and instructor-led training content.

Essential Functions

Facilitation, Mentoring and Coaching

This role serves as the lead facilitator for core organizational leadership and sales courses/programs, building bench strength for leadership and other critical positions, and enhancing the member-centric service that sets Summit apart. Success in this area is dependent upon the L&D Specialist’s ability to:

  • Serve as the lead facilitator for assigned courses and programs (including, but not limited to: Emerging Leaders and Management Essentials courses)
  • Develop and guide:
  • learning liaisons and subject matter experts to contribute to the development and/or delivery of meaningful, memorable, and applicable content
  • managers and mentors to:
  • understand and execute the expectations of their unique and critical roles in creating a positive learner experience, and
  • utilize coaching skills and resources to support the application of learning
  • Ensure information, support tools and learning resources are visible, current, and accessible to support employees’ Own it mindset 

Project Support - Instructional Design and Change Management

With the support and guidance of the Instructional Designer and Technologist the L&D Specialist will grow their skills in learning systems and instructional design to enhance the learner experience. The Specialist will: 

  • Support the development and execution of needs-based solutions for a variety of learner segments that may include: new hires, employee resource groups, sales/service team
  • Select and uses the appropriate method of instructional design to create engaging learning solutions, including e-learning, instructor-led and virtual instructor-led trainings, system users, leadership cohorts, and more
  • Using design and content creation software, design e-learning solutions that enable a blended, interactive learning experience that aligns with SCUs sales culture and leadership philosophy
  • Curate and continuously monitor assigned content to maintain the integrity of learning solutions
  • Research ID trends, identify best practices and develop learning solutions for instructional design and delivery improvements using multi-media, adult learning theory and e-learning techniques
  • Build and test learning assets in the LMS (i.e. courses, e-learning, materials, videos, curricula, etc.)
  • Work cross-functionally with educators and/or project teams to support their development of new, and continuous improvement of existing blended learning solutions, that address identified needs, meet learning objectives, and align with core curriculum

The L&D Specialist is a change advocate, supporting educators in managing the human and operational sides of change.

  • Serve as a SME on projects as assigned, supporting established timeframes, scope, and resources
  • Support or lead change management activities for major (learning and development) business transformation projects
  • Identify change impacts and build stakeholder engagement and communication plans
  • Implement change management techniques and drive adoption for project changes
  • Work within project teams to build project awareness, desire, and support

Leadership/Sales Course/Programs Management (and Promotion)

This consultative leader supports the strategic and operational direction for leadership and sales programs/initiatives across the organization. The L&D Specialist maintains a clear vision for educators, building our leadership bench strength to keep ahead of organizational growth. The person in this role:

  • Continues to build the SCU Leadership Journey Map
  • Helps manage the organizational leadership calendar, partnering with program/course owners (i.e. HR’s Management Essentials, and Lending Program Specialists, etc.) to orchestrate the timely delivery of each component to: align with hiring, corporate initiatives, organizational change, maximize attendance, and accelerate professional growth and individual, departmental and organizational goal achievement
  • Manage assigned content, curriculum and learning programs that drive the productivity and efficiency of SCU’s leaders and sales professionals
  • Builds strong working relationships with all leadership/sales programing educators/stakeholders to ensure the competencies, and skills that make staff successful at Summit are being developed
  • Supports the implementation and ongoing evaluation of the components of Summit Credit Union’s Leadership and Sales Journey maps to maintain alignment with the organization’s mission and purpose, Roadmap (strategy and goals), Values, and Essential Behaviors,
  • Provides coaching to educators to create an inclusive and collaborative learning environment, and ensure leadership and sales concepts (i.e communication skills, member sales approaches, etc.) are reinforced throughout employee learning
  • Monitors course/program metrics for trends and proposes solutions
  • Engage the program sponsor and stakeholders in regular audits and updates to ensure content integrity, business alignment and support
  • Keep program sponsors and stakeholders informed of key performance indicators through project/program reports, and continuously make enhancements when results do not align with forecasted results

This position also:

  • Is an advocate of strategic organizational initiatives, serving as a leadership development subject matter expert on project teams 
  • Partner with the Sr. Learning & Development Specialist – Onboarding and Mentoring, to identify, nurture and equip mentors across the organization with the skills they need to support their mentees
  • Partners closely with the Sr. Learning and Development Specialist – Leadership Empowerment to execute the leadership strategy and support advanced leadership courses when needed
  • Serve as a back-up trainer for other non-sales & leadership courses (i.e. NEO) as needed.
  • Supports the L&D Lead in strengthening the skills of department liaisons who support L&D with their mentor and facilitation skills
  • Ensures the integrity of LMS data related to courses owned including accurate course descriptions and objectives, session availability, attendance, etc. Runs basic reports as needed for the creation of project/program reporting
  • Promotes awareness of leadership & sales programs and learning resources through effective communications leveraging the appropriate channel(s) at the appropriate time, ensuring alignment with the Extended Communications Team’s calendar
  • In collaboration with L&D’s LX Coordinator and Learning Systems Administrator, monitors employee access, awareness and utilization of leadership and sales related content from industry knowledge-resource partners (i.e. CUES and CUNA)
  • Participates in team meetings to share knowledge and make sure team members are informed of developments in programs, projects, and initiatives
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of learning solutions using appropriate methodologies (i.e., ROI Methodology or Kirkpatrick’s Levels of Evaluation)
  • Actively participates and/or takes a leadership role on project teams as assigned. Works closely and collaboratively with the project team fostering positive working relationships
  • Owns and/or facilitates other courses as assigned (on the course audit schedule).

Additional Functions

  • Monitor trends and regulatory changes within the learning specialist’s specialized area of knowledge
  • Research, assess, determine, and implement quality, process and productivity improvements
  • The Learning Specialist does not have direct reports; however, this position is responsible for general supervision of employees throughout the training period, including:
  • Enforcement of employee guidelines
  • Training and instruction
  • Assignment and review of work
  • Acting on employee issues
  • Assigning support
  • Serving as the Accountability Coach for the completion of individual goals
  • Comply with all requirements of BSA, OFAC and the USA Patriot Act/Customer Identification Act (CIP).
  • Assist with additional projects and other duties as assigned by departmental leadership.

Job Specifications

  • Minimum of one to three years of related leadership development, sales enablement and/or related organization wide talent development experience required.
  • Must have professional, well-developed written and oral communication skills necessary for developing and delivering training to new and current employees
  • Have a strong knowledge of the credit union positions and functions
  • Significant experience and demonstrated ability related to public speaking, presentation and facilitation skills is required
  • Must have extensive knowledge of adult training methods, theories, concepts, and techniques
  • Solid judgment is required. Must analyze complicated factual situations, apply functional principles, and develop solutions
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Human Resources or a related field, or the equivalent work experience required
  • APTD (Associate Professional in Talent Development) certification preferred.
  • Intermediate mathematical skills required (arithmetic calculations and concepts involving decimals, percentages, fractions, etc.)
  • Proficiency using the following Microsoft software is required including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Demonstrated proficiency using some or all the following software and applications is preferred (or willingness to acquire):
