Summary: The polysomnographic technologist works under the general supervision of the facility director or sleep laboratory manager to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A polysomnographic technologist is credentialed and licensed in sleep technology and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. Technicians and trainees work under the direct supervision of the credentialed technologist or the medical director.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following.

* Review patient chart and verify the medical order.
* Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free.
* Perform appropriate physiological calibrations to ensure proper signals and make required adjustments.
* Document routine observations, including sleep stages and clinical events, changes in procedure, and other significant events in order to facilitate scoring and interpretation of polysomnographic results.
* Perform routine positive airway pressure (PAP) interface fitting and desensitization.
* Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.).
* Accurately summarize patients sleep stages, respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousal analysis, and other clinical events.
* Score sleep/wake stages and clinical events (such as respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) standards.
* Demonstrate adherence to cleaning and disinfection procedures.
* Provide patient training/education related to sleep and testing procedures.
* Monitor patient safety and adhere to patient safety protocols.
* Calibrate and maintain all sleep related equipment as needed.
* Answer phones, prepare charts, perform data entry and register patients as needed.
* Follow PMA department protocols.
* Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory duties.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience: Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST), or Respiratory Care Practitioner (RRT) with Sleep Disorders Specialist (SDS) credential. 2+ years of sleep lab experience as a nighttime technologist.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports, and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software and the Microsoft Office Suite of products. Knowledge of basic office equipment should include: Internet and email, copy and fax machines, postage meter and telephone.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Current certification in CPR & Basic Life Support (BLS). Current Polysomnography license with the Medical Board of California.
