Description

The Position

Genentech (Research and Early Development) seeks a talented and highly motivated Research Software Engineer to design and lead implementation of novel interactive data visualization and analysis tools for integrative genomics. These will support our large-scale cellular and tissue profiling initiatives using sequencing and imaging technologies in projects that span the interface of human genetics, functional and perturbational genomics, molecular biology, disease model engineering, and advanced computational methodology.

In this role, you will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of computational biologists, machine learning scientists and engineers, software and data engineers as we test new types of hypotheses through the novel integration of emerging data types, particularly single-cell resolution sequencing and imaging perturbation assays.

Job duties and responsibilities will include

* Creating effective, beautiful, and usable interactive data analysis interfaces to visualize, explore and interrogate integrated data from diverse technologies and biological systems.

* Designing new data visualization modes to help bench and computational scientists understand large scale multi-omic experiments

* Developing highly performant, responsive, interactive analysis software for large datasets

* Understanding and conceptualizing the complex, emerging needs of our scientists, whether they are working at the keyboard or the bench.

* Planning and prioritizing complex scientific software projects in conjunction with scientific collaborators and other stakeholders.

* Collaborating with local and off-shore engineering teams to support your software development efforts.

* Effectively articulating and communicating strategies, ideas, goals and progress to departmental, cross-functional and senior management.

* Contributing to the broader scientific community through open-source software development.

Successful candidates will meet many of the following requirements:

* Master's degree (or higher) in a quantitative field such as Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, Computational Biology or related fields.

* 5+ years relevant experience (including any graduate school) in biomedical data visualization and analysis. Seniority of position will depend on experience and other factors

* Demonstrated excellence in the design and implementation of modern data visualization systems and experience with JavaScript and modern web technologies, and high-level languages for data analysis such as Python and/or R

* Hands-on experience wrangling, analyzing and visualizing biomedical data. Although not a requirement, additional consideration is given to candidates with experience working with single cell RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, and multi-modal assays, and/or with high resolution imaging-based phenotypic screening experiments.

* Adherence to state-of-the-art practices in software development

* Enthusiastic about working in a scientific environment, especially one focused on drug discovery and development.

* Some track record of publishing impactful research artifacts: for example, peer-reviewed publications, open source projects, interactive software tools, and/or others as applicable.

* Have a flexible learning mindset and be able to work in a fluid and dynamic environment.

* Eager to find opportunities to build community, celebrate and have fun connecting with people in ways that generate enthusiasm and commitment

* Comfortable leading globally distributed development teams

* Strong technical communication skills.

What to expect from us:

* A highly collaborative and dynamic research environment where we aim to advance the rate of scientific discovery using purposefully built solutions.

* Access to large data sets, samples and compute resources.

* Access to state-of-the-art technologies and pioneering research.

* Participation in seminar series featuring academic and industry scientists.

* Campus-like lifestyle with a healthy work-life balance.

* Mentored opportunities to further develop professional skills.
