The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking to appoint a Manager, Advocacy and Media to join our Bi-national Offices and Professional Practice department. 

Reporting to the Executive General Manager, Bi-national Offices and Professional Practice, the Manager, Advocacy and Media will be responsible for overseeing the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP) public profile to drive awareness of psychiatry and strengthen leadership within the mental health sector.

This role will be responsible to:
Work collaboratively with the Board, Committees, and staff to develop the College advocacy strategy outlining the vision for advocacy, connection the College Strategic Plan, core advocacy areas at different jurisdictional levels.
Develop and implement an annual media and external communications plan to support the RANZCP’s strategic vision and advocacy.
Identify media opportunities to advocate for, and build the profile of psychiatry and coordinate appropriate action in consultation with the Executive General Manager, Di-national Offices and Professional Practices.
Create the externally facing content to support advocacy objectives (including narrative, case for support, call to action).
Analyse government and stakeholder positioning in relation to the College advocacy areas – identify tactics for execution – in formal alliances, alone, and informal alignment.
Identify the resources (data, evidence, positions, comms assets, College Board/Staff/Committee/Members) to mobilise the advocacy strategy.
Identify the risk associated with advocacy areas and formulate risk treatment approaches.
In accordance with the new Lived Experience Strategy, identify the role of consumers in the advocacy objectives and implementation of the advocacy strategy.
Establish metrics relating to public sentiment on core advocacy areas to guide broader community supported advocacy.
The successful candidate will have:
Experience at a management level, with a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in advocacy, communications, or a strategic role.
Experience in the development and execution of advocacy strategies in a relevant sector – health, not-for-profit, or government including strategy formation, operational planning, and evaluation.
Experience working with diverse stakeholders in the health, not-for-profit or government sectors, including community consultation and integration of lived experience.
Experience developing and implementing new strategic and advocacy initiatives.
Strong project management skills that display ownership from concept to embedding.
The ability to understand complex information and translate it into simple, powerful and effective communication.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship management skills with the ability to influence and work collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
