Scoring Content Specialist II, Social Studies/ELA

A Scoring Content Specialist II, ELA acts as a lead on assigned scoring contracts and has experience with a variety of assessment programs. A Specialist II acts as a liaison with internal and external clients in matters associated with Scoring Services by contributing content knowledge and scoring expertise. A Specialist II assures quality and adherence to scoring specifications and standards by providing coordination and uniformity within scoring projects over time. A Specialist II supports the mission of Scoring Services by promoting the continuous improvement and efficiency of scoring activities by supervising, mentoring, and evaluating Scoring personnel.


  • Serve as a lead and oversee the fulfillment of one or more assessment program requirements in accordance with prescribed standards and expectations for all phases of the scoring process.
  • Assist with other projects as requested.
  • Demonstrate project management and time management skills, the ability to work independently, and the ability to train and coordinate internal and external team members, including large numbers of temporary personnel and off-site personnel.
  • Write end of project reports including some analysis of scoring data, or other reports as required.
  • Oversee the preparation of effective training materials to ensure high quality and efficiency in scoring, including the generation of pre-recorded interactive training materials (training modules).
  • Issue clear written and oral instructions and give prompt quality feedback.
  • Demonstrate cost consciousness when allocating time and resources.
  • Facilitate client meetings and provide content knowledge and feedback.
  • Train and present scoring material using a variety of media to local and remote scoring personnel.
  • Select, evaluate, and assign scoring leadership and readers.
  • Supervise local and remote scoring leadership and readers assigned to scoring projects.
  • Monitor the quality and accuracy of ongoing scoring project(s), evaluate ongoing project workflow, anticipate problems in a timely manner, and participate in problem resolution.
  • Train and provide feedback for colleagues.
  • Remain current with methods, software, and technologies in use; adapt to new technologies and use technology to increase productivity.
  • Demonstrate awareness of current developments in education and assessment and engage in continuous professional development.
  • Provide scoring and content knowledge to other departments as assigned, e.g., item development, item reviews, test construction, passage finding.
  • Work with project managers to adhere to project schedules and communicate with other functional groups such as Client Services, CD&D, Scanning, etc.
  • Conduct or attend all required meetings and/or professional development seminars, live or through remote access.
  • Travel as necessary to remote scoring sites, state departments of education, or other designated meeting sites, including overnight (0-15%).
  • Follow the prescribed standards, policies, and procedures established within Cognia.
  • Perform duties and fulfill responsibilities that may, from time to time, include related or unrelated tasks.


Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited College or University and strong coursework in content area required; degree in content area preferred.
  • Three to five years of Scoring leadership experience required; experience as a contract lead with a variety of scoring assignments; effective client interaction; OR equivalent experience

  • Ability to work with a team

Anticipated Travel (may include local, national, and/or international travel):

  • Occasional travel (10%-20%)
