Scope of Position: You will join a dynamic, cross-functional group that focuses on inventing, developing, and deploying novel laser-based material processing solutions. We work as a close team to support the full spectrum of Businesses Divisions at Corning as well as the S&T groups. The role is a rewarding systems engineering position driven to provide enhanced laser processing solutions that will have impact in emerging and established applications. Specific focus will be on:
-mechanical, precision motion, control, and software systems to enable laser processing equipment and automation
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Work cooperatively with other scientists and engineers in the group and across organizations to establish hardware and software solutions for laser assisted manufacturing
Strengthen laser processing and engineering capabilities aligned with Cornings Manufacturing Technology and Engineering, and Science and Technology communities
Support development of laser processes and engineering hardware to shape new materials, new part geometries, or provide improvements in precision, quality, throughput, or yield
Transfer new technologies to equipment and process receivers, provide remote system support, and develop system documentation
Integrate new processes and systems into manufacturing equipment to support Cornings world-wide laser processing solutions
Required Skills:
Experience with opto-mechanical systems, laser beam delivery, and related design and system engineering principles
Experience in hardware and/or software platform design and development (including lasers, optics, mechanics, software, algorithms, data analysis, etc.)
Expertise with data evaluation and/or design software such as MATLAB, LabView, Python, SolidWorks
Ability to work with team members across variety of technology fields (e.g. physics, chemistry, material science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering) to solve system-level problems as part of developing new processes and new hardware
Proficiency for problem-solving, critical thinking, and self-evaluation
Ability to work effectively in a small matrixed team: be cooperative, flexible, and respectful, communicate constructively, show commitment, and work toward a common goal
Desired Skills:
Experience with laser processing of glass and ceramics.
Expertise with PLC system design, programming, and deployment
Experience leveraging external suppliers and system integrators to design, build, and install system components or full systems in manufacturing environment
