Instrumentation Specialist

Overview

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and College of Science at Utah State University (USU) invite applications for an Instrumentation Specialist (Lab Manager SR) to manage a suite of analytical, magnetic resonance and imaging instruments. These instruments support the research and teaching activities within the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and College of Science. This is a twelve-month position, located on the main campus in Logan, UT.

Responsibilities
  • Manage, operate and perform maintenance to support the usage of NMR, LC-MS, GC-MS, EPR and micro-CT instruments in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry and College of Science
  • Train users on instrumentation
  • Facilitate and support faculty and student research projects by assisting in the application of the analytical techniques and data management
  • Provide support for technique selection and application, method development, data interpretation, and troubleshooting
  • Provide support for use of instrumentation in teaching labs
  • Facilitate occasional access to instrumentation for outside users
  • Execute and/or organize troubleshooting, service and repair of instruments as needed
  • Working collaboratively with business services staff to develop fee structures and manage instrument usage billing
  • Conduct analyses of submitted samples
  • Collaborate with faculty on developing and delivering lab curricula using advanced instrumentation
  • Collaborate on grant-seeking to acquire and enhance departmental instrumentation
  • Engage with opportunities to attend meetings, workshops, and/or short-courses applicable to instrument
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in chemistry or related area, or a masters degree with at least three years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the operation of NMR, LC-MS and GC-MS instrumentation
  • Willingness to proactively engage in professional development and learn new skills
  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills
  • Enthusiasm for training student users
  • Ability to foster a productive and cooperative environment with the goal of providing exceptional educational opportunities through experiential learning
  • Experience with electronic equipment, power tools, and hand tools
