Electrical Design Engineer – Generators

My client in the generator industry is looking for an Electrical Design Engineer to join their team in Sandton.The main purpose of this position is to support, advice & assist the Johannesburg Generator department by being directly involved with Engineered solutions and providing a Technical / Engineering aspect to Quotations, Floor solutions, Site installations and Commissioning.Duties will include, but are not limited to, the following:ProposalsSupport the Projects and Product department with technical / operational requirements at the start of a project. This will include engine derating calculations, product selection, generator operational philosophies, installation and commissioning criteria.Be closely involved with site inspections, audits, customer liaison (typically consulting engineers) and assist with concept designs and technical viable solutions in complex power applications both LV and MV proposals.Assist in the preparation of conceptual mechanical designs, which can be used to calculate a cost-effective generator solution.Evaluate engine and alternator scope of supply in order to assess suitability of supplier-supplied peripherals to ensure fail-safe operation:Evaluate engine speed control possibilities in the event of synchronization required.Devise solutions to speed control interfacing when not a standard type of engine, or when a new type of engine is utilized.Evaluate alternator scope of supply in order to assess suitability of AVR system in the event of synchronization required.As far as possible opt for technical proposals based on Group products and services opportunities.Engineering and Design Department:Design the control panel drawings (inclusive of general arrangement drawings and schematics) for manufacturing in line with project KPI delivery time lines and considering:Regulations, standards, ergonomics and cost effectiveness.Customer / project-specific requirements must be considered and incorporated where required / possible.Where required, PLC control / generator controllers must be implemented in order to manage multiple generator / multiple switchgear installations, with associated HMI for manual intervention in the event of a PLC control / generator controller system failure.Play an active role in the Generator Sets Engineering & Design Department.Technical interfacing with all the Internal departments, Customer base and Suppliers.Design generator solutions of high value i.e.: Meeting quality standards at the lowest possible cost and within authoritative regulations (Africa and Beyond).Design generator and control system solutions where the Groups products and services take preference.Partake in the development of mechanical designs related to generator set solutions.Create an environment where effective interaction with the Field Service Team is conducive to develop depth within the Field Services Department.Make technical recommendations to improve manufacturing process capabilities and improving product reliability.Liaison with customer-appointed DB/Switchboard sub-contractors where the company has to control remote-mounted switchgear in their DBs. This involves ensuring that the correct switchgear peripherals are supplied by others, and also the design and provision of the remote-control wiring diagrams to such subcontractors in order to tie up with the companys control systems. This is particularly applicable in MV switchgear installations.Prepare / oversee mechanical designs (either personally or through outsourcing) for generator sets, including but not limited to:Structural designs.Container / canopy designs.Exhaust system designs, including lagging and cladding requirements.Fuel system and piping designs.Cool system and piping designs.Generator set ventilation and louvre designs, ensuring compliance with sound attenuation requirements.Contribute to a high performing independent design team.Contribute in the Implementation and management of a standardized design library that is in line with technological developments and advancements.Authorize, in the absence of Team Leader, electrical and mechanical designs for JHB facility production.Take a strategic approach to the design and use of controllers including auxiliary equipment.Implement and assist with ISO quality standards related to the Engineering Department and effect it has on others.Monitor engineering developments and new projects within the engineering, power generation and energy sectors.Production:Design with a continuous focus to improve manufacturing processes, minimize production cost and increase product reliability.Interface with artisans and technicians where technical issues needs to be resolved between design and manufacturing.Ensure approved electrical and mechanical design requirements are complied with throughout the manufacturing process.Program of generator controllers for sets in production prior to FAT.Confirm operational criteria of each generator set meets the respective design requirement prior to FAT.Partake in FAT process in the presence of customers to ensure overall generator set acceptance.Sign off all engineering related QA/QC paperwork throughout the manufacturing process, including the final acceptance documentation, to ensure ISO complianceTest, Install, Commission and Service:The Engineering department takes responsibility for resolving technical faults during final site testing by the Field Service department.Final commissioning on site.Liaison with customers / end users in structuring procedures where power outages will be minimized during complex commissioning procedures.Fault finding and repairs on site in the event of a generator failure where support will also be given by the Field Services department.Identify / diagnose generator problems telephonically in conjunction with the preceding item.Train customers and assist in the development of a highly competent and independent Field Services team.Present technical solutions / clarifying technical requirements with Consulting Engineers.REQUIREMENTS:MatricA tertiary graduate (or equivalent) qualification in the Electrical Engineering field with experience in generator controls and synchronized systems.At least five years work experience involving engineering design within the generation, integration and electrical infrastructure industry.At least five years practical experience in electrical design execution and commissioning of complete and integrated power generation solutions.Broad knowledge on the different varieties of Generator Controllers.Good knowledge of reputable and reliable equipment and service suppliers in the industry.Computer literacy good knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Project and Design Software.A code 8 drivers licence.A valid passport.Maintain the ISO Quality Management SystemPosition will require out of town and country travel
