KNOWLEDGE AND INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SERVICES (CAPE TOWN OFFICE) The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation's health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. INSTITUTIONAL REPOSITORY OFFICER 2-year contract (1 post) The Information Management Officer: Institutional Repository plans, implements, and evaluates sustainable institutional repository (IR) technologies, services, and policies. The position enables research and scholarship produced by the SAMRC, reach the widest possible audience. This position will be responsible for enhancing the global reach and reputation of the SAMRC research and scholarship. The position requires an understanding of and ability to make critical decisions related to scholarly research and publication practices as well as to copyright issues. This role requires strong interpersonal skills to support and collaborate with research units and the vendors. Key responsibilities will be: Create new and maintain existing IR collections Manage the IR operations, workflows, protocols, policies, and procedures in keeping with IR best practices; copyright; open access; and other relevant guidelines. Ensure responsive and timely support for SAMRC staff, with regards to submission of research and scholarship to the IR. Answer general inquiries, fulfill requests, and serve as first point of contact for technical support related to the IR. Identify and solicit new content for the IR. Maintain and quality-check metadata according to standards. Contribute to IR user needs analysis, product evaluation, selection, customization, testing, and implementation/migration. Interface with IR software vendor support team. Communicate changing user needs and requirements. Troubleshoot IR software issues, and report problems in a timely manner. Ensure that vendor addresses issues in a timely manner. Prepare statistics and reports to the Division Manager. Provide tailored research data management and institutional repository awareness and training to staff. May supervise assistants and/or provide other support in line with the priorities of the KIMS Division. Core Requirements A Bachelor's degree in Library and Information Science or Archival Studies or any B degree with a LIS post-graduate diploma A minimum of three years of library, archives or higher education experience Previous library/archival indexing and cataloguing. Knowledge of digital curation standards and best practices Previous experience supporting Institutional Repositories or other platforms used to curate and/or provide access to digital assets. Knowledge of and ability to evaluate IR software applications. Key skills and experience A minimum of three years of library, archives preferably in an academic setting. Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure. Ability to identify and solve problems independently and collaboratively. Ability to exercise good judgment consistent with SAMRC relevant policies and procedures. Ability to interact and communicate with skill, tact, and courtesy with users, colleagues and vendors. Experience in supporting research. Advantage Post-graduate diploma in Library and Information Science will be an added advantage.
