Accountable to: Operations Manager

Job Functions:To manage, promote, and develop the YMCA furniture showrooms

Responsible for: All aspects of the showrooms, furniture staff, volunteers and the profitability of the Furniture Service

Retail Shops Manager - Key Tasks:
  • To achieve all financial target set.
  • To oversee and manage the showroom teams, optimising store turnover and commercial opportunity through excellent customer service and analytical skills.
  • To plan and implement effective showroom layouts, merchandising, and customer flow maximising appearance and image while working with staff and volunteers to ensure the retail showrooms meet customer and retail objectives.
  • To oversee recruitment, inductions, allocation and supervision of work, objective setting, performance reviews and the day to day HR issues within the service.
  • To provide a high standard of service ensuring customer needs are met and positive lasting impression achieved.
  • To manage customer complaints and deal effectively with all messages and enquiries.
  • To oversee the van movements in each store ensuring efficiency, performance, effectiveness and impact to include deliveries, collections, stock movement as well as the security of the vans overnight.
  • To manage effective cash handling/cashing up routines, regular banking, accounting tasks, KPI reporting, budget planning and report writing.
  • To conduct regular effective team meetings.
  • To maximise the Gift Aid income and procedure within all stores ensuring a full understanding of all staff and volunteers through continual training.
  • To manage all aspects of Health & Safety within stores in accordance to the company Health & Safety Policy with guidance from our H&S officer.
  • To assist, identify, communicate and respond to the training needs of showroom staff and volunteers.
  • To manage Holidays, absence, staff rotas and uniform allocation/return in line with company procedures and expectations.
  • To manage and conduct all performance reviews and objective setting with your team of staff.
  • To develop personal and professional skills through on-going training as provided by the organisation or elsewhere subject to organisation approval
  • To develop and implement policies and procedures in line with retail

  • To ensure that the Vison, Mission and Values of the YMCA are promoted.
  • To ensure compliance with the requirements of statutory bodies.
  • To undertake any other duties consistent with the post.
Scope and Limits of Authority

The postholder will organise and manage shop staff, trainees, and volunteers to assist in all operation of large furniture retail showrooms.

Retail Shops Manager - Person Specification / Key Competencies
  • Knowledge
  • Knowledge of Multi site retailing
  • Knowledge of furniture re-use/re-cycling schemes
  • Understanding of working with low income groups, or those in crisis
  • Knowledge of the charity retail sector
  • Knowledge and experience of internet trading
Retail Shops Manager - Experience
  • Proven experience of supervising people, including working with staff and volunteers
  • Experience of day-to-day management of a project, shops, or other retail operation
  • Proven track record in consistently achieving sales targets and budgets
Retail Shops Manager - Skills / Abilities
  • Clean, current driving licence
  • Management skills, including ability to lead and motivate staff and volunteers
  • Excellent time management and organisational skills
  • Excellent financial and analytical skills including ability to reconcile cash accurately
  • Good ITQ computer skills
