Court Evaluator - Mukilteo E&T

Court Evaluator - FT - 40hours per week

Compass Health is currently looking for a Court Evaluator for our Evaluation & Treatment facility in Mukilteo!

Compass Health's Evaluation and Treatment facility provides a 16-bed inpatient program in Mukilteo to mentally ill adults under 72-hour involuntary detention and/or 14-day commitment in accordance with Washington State Involuntary Treatment Act, RCW 71.05.

Evaluation begins upon admission to obtain baseline information and to assess physical status, preform psychological evaluation and mental status examination and determine global functioning. The data is continually updated in an individualized treatment plan to provide the highest quality of care possible in a dynamic situation. Clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction are assessed and the data is used to improve treatment within our quality improvement program.

What you will be performing

The Court Evaluator is responsible for providing assessment and evaluation as well as oversight for clients who are going through the involuntary treatment act (ITA) process at Compass Health's Mukilteo Evaluation and Treatment Facility (E&T). Essential job functions include but are not limited to, preparing declarations and petitions, attending all necessary court hearing, documenting in the electronic health record and processing other related paperwork. This position is responsible for educating and guiding E&T workforce members regarding ITA laws and regulations, liaising with the Snohomish County Prosecutors office ITA Court representatives and engaging with treatment team members for care planning, court preparation and alternative treatment measures.

  • Represents Compass Health's position on involuntary/civil commitment proceedings as outlined in RCW 71.05.
  • Clinically evaluates clients detained by a DCR on an initial 120 hour hold and assesses whether additional inpatient hospitalization is needed or whether a less restrictive option is appropriate.
  • Evaluates clients to establish whether there is a presence of mental disorder and a danger to self, others, property or grave disability to adequately care for health and safety needs.
  • Collaborates with families, court officials, county representatives, nurses, case managers, physicians, other practitioners, caregivers and community resources and agencies.
  • Advocates on behalf of clients and caregivers for service access or creation and for the protection of the client's health, safety, and rights.
  • Co-authors with attending provider 120 hour, 14/90/180-day petitions for involuntary treatment.
  • Facilitates the progression of the ITA process per the client's treatment plan in order to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Provides expert witness testimony in court proceedings through a combination of client evaluation, medical chart review, discussions with treatment providers and witnesses and direct examination / cross examination from the Snohomish County Prosecutors office

What you will be carrying along

  • MA/MS/MSW/PhD/PsyD Degree in a Behavioral Science related field.
  • Qualifies as a Mental Health Professional (MHP) as defined by WAC.
  • Independent Professional licensure preferred (LMHC, LICSW, PsyD). Individuals who do not already hold a license or associate license through the Washington State Department of Health must submit Agency Affiliated Counselor application upon hire and be approved by the DOH.
  • Training in Motivational Interviewing, DBT, and Trauma-Informed Care preferred. Ability to obtain training within 90 days of hire required.
  • Minimum two (2) years' experience in the areas of acute mental healthcare in an inpatient, outpatient or legal setting preferred.
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification and Food Handlers permit, or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.

  • Ability to quickly interview, assess and mediate conflict while maintaining calmness during highly volatile situations
  • Skilled in eliciting client cooperation and in defusing hostile/violent behavior
  • Ability to be flexible and quickly change direction when needed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to make presentations to diverse audiences and compose clear, concise clinical file notes and documentation
  • Must be detail oriented.
