Position Description
Position Title: Financial Underwriter
Department: Financial Services
Reports to: Senior Financial Underwriter Director

Position Summary
The Financial Underwriter is responsible for providing project management support to deliver projects within the established budget and timeline. This position is a key business member of a project team, participates in program and project development, disseminates project information and is an active participant in project-related work groups and committees.

Responsibilities
The Financial Underwriter will spend a majority of his/her time in these activities:
- Serve as project representative or loan officer on business or community development incentive projects.
- Work with financial networks, local and economic development networks and other entities in negotiating and developing project funding.
- Develop networks to support business funding.
- Evaluate business or community financial assistance applications, recommend incentive awards, and work with the Contract Specialist and others to negotiate contract terms with award recipients.
- Demonstrate timely completion of financial assistance application reviews and recommendations.
- Demonstrate strong business writing skills.
- Effectively demonstrate communication, organization, problem solving, project management, continuous improvement and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrate solid proficiency with all WEDC project databases.
- Participate in program, policy and process development activities
- Proactively and consistently bring tasks to successful completion, implementation of financial packages that enhance financial performance and client growth within the established budget and timeline.
- Act as a key member of the project team, participate in program and project development, disseminate project information and be an active participant in project-related work groups and committees.
- Review and analyze business or community assistance projects and provide recommendations for funding.
- Act as a financial packaging expert who maintains rapport and works closely with financial networks that fund and invest in business prospects or community development projects.
- Review historical and projected financial statements, including corporate and personal statements in determining financial risk in economic development projects.
- Draft staff reviews of financial assistance applications.
- Assist Underwriting Team Program Managers to review and revise program operations to assure program consistency with WEDC mission.
- Assist the Contract Specialist in the development of financial assistance contracts, loan documents and other documentation.
- Assist in the creation and maintenance of program applications, implementation manuals, and guides.
- Maintain knowledge of public and private business development resources.
- Participate in training and membership in organizations to enhance professional development.
- Represent WEDC at public relations events, conferences, and meetings regarding economic development.
- Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
- Degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, Accounting, related field or comparable education/experience/training.
- Minimum of three years of experience in underwriting or related field.
- Senior level commensurate with experience.
Skills and Talents:
- PC applications including word processing, spreadsheet, database management and Windows software.
- Quantitative, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to deal effectively with senior executives, as well as diverse groups of people internal and external to the organization, team player.
- Organizational and record-keeping skills; attention to detail.

Other Requirements
- State-wide travel will occur on an occasional basis, less than 20% of the time. Travel is anticipated to include day and overnight travel.
- Based on the responsibilities of this position, this position may need to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
