American Guild of Musical Artists (AGMA) is the labor union of singers, dancers, and staging staff in opera, ballet and concert dance, and concert choral performance in the United States.  A national union with a membership of approximately 6,500 artists, AGMA provides forceful advocacy and defense of its members’ employment and artistic rights.  AGMA has a direct charter from the AFL-CIO and is affiliated with the AFL-CIO Branch of Associated Actors and Artists of America and the Department for Professional Employees (DPE). AGMA is also a part of the Coalition of Broadway Unions and Guilds (COBUG).

Job Summary

Under the direction of the National Organizing Director and assigned Negotiator, the AGMA Business Representative is responsible for infusing member engagement, participation, and education into all aspects of AGMA activities.  As a highly visible member of AGMA’s professional staff, the AGMA Business Representative will welcome new members into AGMA by providing educational materials and hosting member orientations and trainings. The AGMA Business Representative will also support and assist their assigned Negotiator in bargaining and enforcing contracts and in handling member issues and grievances.  The AGMA Business Representative will work with and support the National Organizing Director on internal and external organizing campaigns and in developing further member engagement materials and trainings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

·       Present new member orientations for artists at assigned companies, in person and/or via videoconference.

·       Collaborate with assigned Negotiator in offering delegate trainings and leadership development at assigned companies, in person and/or via videoconference.

·       Support assigned Negotiator in handling day-to-day issues and contract enforcement at AGMA signatory companies.

·       Support assigned Negotiator in negotiations, including conducting research, preparing comps, creating spreadsheets, drafting proposals, and facilitating workplace job actions.

·       Support National Organizing Director on new organizing campaigns.

·       Support National Organizing Director in developing new, engaging, and professional member engagement and education activities and materials.

·       Review / approve new member applications and send welcome materials and follow up communications to joining members.

·       Enter contract data into membership database for artists in assigned companies and send welcome materials and follow up communications to guest / traveling artists for each contract at assigned companies.

·       Support AGMA’s Membership Department staff in sending reminders / communications regarding dues to members in assigned companies.

·       Collaborate with assigned Negotiator and Director of Communications to provide regular information updates, such as newsletters, to members at all assigned companies.

·       Perform other duties as assigned.


·       Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

·       Two or more years of related work experience (e.g., union staff, membership organization staff, etc.).

·       Knowledge of labor unions and labor relations issues, including familiarity with collective bargaining agreements (CBAs).

·       Strong research, organizational, and writing skills.

·       Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to work with individuals at all organizational levels, both internally and externally, including a diverse range of artist members.

·       Detail oriented.

·       Ability to take initiative and work independently and autonomously.

·       Ability to manage competing priorities, take direction, handle multiple projects at once, and work effectively under deadlines.

·       Ability to work collaboratively and in a team setting, both in person and remotely.

·       Strong skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneDrive), Zoom, Adobe, Google Suite.

·       Ability to learn and utilize membership database systems.

·       Familiarity and facility with all social media platforms.

·       Knowledge of or experience in the performing arts preferred.

·       Spanish language proficiency is a plus, but not required.

Working Conditions / Locations

·       A combination of in-office, remote, and on-site work at AGMA signatory companies may be required.  Some travel required.

·       Evening and/or weekend work required on occasion.

Physical Requirements

Able to sit for extended periods.


Salary commensurate with experience, $70,000 - $75,000 range, excellent benefit package.
