The Trauma Therapist provides trauma counseling for crime victims. Here are the essential responsibilities of this position:

  • Provide trauma therapy to adult and child victims of crime, including: Assessment, individual and group therapy, and crisis intervention
  • Provide information and referrals to all clients in need following the agency’s and department’s protocol
  • Work collaboratively with the district attorney to provide support for victims of crime
  • Complete and maintain training certification as NYS DOH Rape Crisis counselor
  • Report any behavior or implication of behavior of child abuse to the authorities
  • Participate service reach by researching community organizations
  • Assist with fundraisers and special events (some of these may be outside agency hours of operation)
  • Complete all administrative tasks as assigned on a timely basis, this includes, but is not limited to; documenting all activities, preparing weekly and monthly activity reports, maintaining up-to-date case records, and inputting into client database
    • Follow protocol in completion of these reports
  • Maintain statistics and prepare reports as needed, and maintain up-to-date client records
  • Other duties as assigned based upon need of program


Skills and Abilities:

  • Established clinical skills, providing both individual and group counseling
  • Knowledge of public, private and community agencies including law enforcement agencies that may be utilized to help victims of crime;
  • Ability to get along well with others and gain their cooperation
  • Provide excellent and thorough customer service to all victims. Take the necessary time to understand clients’ needs.
    • If a client/prospective client falls outside of jurisdiction, research resources and provide effective assistance.
    • Ability to relate to persons in need of assistance
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Complete biopsychosocial assessments after three visits
  • Complete professional assessments after five visits and during closing
  • Ability to identify information and data critical to cases;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and read and comprehend procedures and implement them effectively
  • Ability to complete administrative tasks on a timely basis, including documenting all activities and maintaining up-to-date records in clients database
  • Be dependable, transparent on all tasks, receptive to supervision
  • Possess compassion and empathy
  • Must be able to get to and from various work locations throughout the day, including Family Services, court, hospital, police departments, social services, etc.
  • Possess strong advocacy skills; meet the needs of client with effective solutions
  • Possess ‘out of the box’ thinking and resourcefulness
  • Ability to work effectively when under extreme pressure
  • Ability to work independently; but relate issues to manager appropriately
  • Attend supervision meetings as required
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system and family court system

Qualifications:

  • NY State Licensed Master Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Social Worker, or Licensed Mental Health Counselor.
  • Two years of experience preferred with trauma informed therapy
  • Bilingual preferred, English/Spanish
  • Experience working in a non-profit, human services setting preferred and working with a diverse population
  • Ability to work in a team in a collaborative manner; and work with other team members on shared client issues
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills including working knowledge of an email word and excel
