About Us We are Life Cycle UK, a charity that helps people feel healthier, happier and more connected to each other using cycling as a vehicle. We are based in Bristol and work across the West of England and Derbyshire and we have been transforming lives through cycling since 1999. We know that cycling will play a key role in tackling our societys biggest challenges: poor health and wellbeing, COVID-19 and the climate emergency. Our work is underpinned by our belief that cycling is an inherently simple, safe and accessible activity. However, this view isnt shared by everyone. We work to remove the barriers to accessing this low-cost, green and healthy form of transport by giving people of all ages and backgrounds the skills and confidence to cycle safely. Were looking for a Cycle Instructor to join us on either a freelance basis or as part of the Kickstarter scheme. As a Cycle Instructor, you will deliver a range of cycling and Bikeability training to pupils at schools throughout Swindon. Youll be tasked with supporting and encouraging young cyclists to fall in love with the bicycle as a healthy, practical and cost-effective means of transports. Inspiring young people with your enthusiasm (and skills), you will ensure they have the confidence and practical skills to safely ride on the road and will feel empowered to give cycling a go. Bikeability is a programme of cycle training delivered in schools across the country that aims to ensure children and young people have the skills and confidence to make every day journeys on the road by bicycle. Once youve completed your own 1st 4 Sport accredited training, you will: - Deliver Bikeability and Bikeability Plus training to school-aged children - Complete session plans, risk assessments, course registers and progression trackers - Support our peer-to-peer support process on the training delivered - Upload all course results to our database - Help to mentor and observe new Instructors - Complete any incident report as necessary What do I need? To join us as a Cycle Instructor, you will need: - To be a confident urban cyclist - To be willing to work outdoors all year round. - To be friendly, tolerant, outgoing and able to empathise with the challenges that young people may experience - Good organisational and computer skills: Basic Microsoft Excel skills - To be a good listener with excellent communication skills - To be punctual, reliable and trustworthy Due to the nature of the role, the successful applicant must be at least 18 years old and able to pass an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check (DBS). Experience in a coaching, training or instructing role with children and young people (e.g. helping with a football team, swimming, after school club, guides/scout groups) would be beneficial to your application. A First Aid qualification would also be an advantage, as would basic bicycle maintenance skills. Other organisations may call this role Bikeability Instructor, Trainer, Cycle Training Instructor, On-Road Cycle Instructor, Cycling Instructor, or Outdoors Instructor. This is a flexible hours role: You can choose to work between two and five days per week. This role is subject to an enhanced DBS check. The closing date for this role is the 17th January 2022.
