  • Job Summary
    • Provides professional nursing care for outpatient clinic patients in the Department of Urology, following established standards and practices. Duties include, but are not limited to: patient assessment, procedure assistance, patient teaching and telephone triage.

    • Experience
      • 2 years of professional nursing experience; At least 1 year of previous outpatient experience highly desirable.
    • License/Certification/Registration
      • Registered Nurse license in the District of Columbia/Maryland/Virginia; CPR certification.
    • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
      • Knowledge of professional nursing theory and practice to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care; Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing to provide ongoing patient care; Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, and the public. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Primary Duties and Responsibilities
    • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
    • Performs quality professional nursing service in outpatient clinical setting including, but not limited to: patient assessment, performing procedures, administering medications, patient education, and telephone triage, advising LPN and MA in delivery of nursing care.
    • Greets patients and prepares them for examination. Screens patients for appropriate information. Instructs patients in the collection of samples and tests.
    • Prepares equipment and assists physician during treatment, examination, and testing of patients.
    • Observes, records, and reports patient’s condition and reaction to drugs, treatments and procedures to physicians. Administers prescribed medications, treatments, and procedures in accordance with nursing standards and GUH policies and procedures.
    • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results. Obtains and reviews consent forms, treatment plans, and side effects as appropriate. Discusses potential complications with patient and family.
    • Assesses patient need, concerns and problems through direct patient interaction or telephone triage.
    • Administers medication, i.e. Lidocain, BCG, Lupron, etc and treatments as ordered by physician, in accordance to GUH policies and procedures.
    • Educates patient and family about diagnostic procedures, medications, nutrition, and maintenance of health and wellness. Schedules in services and education sessions with patients and families.
    • Performs diagnostic Urologic procedures including but not limited to, PVR, flow studies, Urodynamics, TUMT, BCG Bladder Int for Bladder Cancer, Cystoscopy, TRUS, TRUS Biopsy, MRI Fusion Biopsy.
    • Performs quality control functions of assigned area as directed. Participates in activities to develop and implement quality improvement activities within practice area.
    • Assists in retrieval of research patient information and patient enrollment activities in conjunction with Nurse Manager.
    • Maintains collaborative relationships with personnel in other divisions and departments.
    • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures; attends required meetings and participates in committees as requested.
    • Acts as a resource for LPN and MA in department.
    • Maintains an active role in evaluating efficiency of patient care and collaborating with Nurse Manager and MD for continued process improvements.
    • Provides coverage at department satellite locations as needed.
    • Exemplifies Guest and Staff Relations and exemplifies Commitment to Caring (C2C) Customer Service/Courtesy behaviors in all activities.
    • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
