technical product manager sr – Engineering & Operations Excellence

Job Summary and Mission

Join our nimble and collaborative team unlocking technology solutions for the Customer and Retail Technology organization.  This role contributes to Starbucks success by driving the creation or consolidation of engineering tools & standards, to improve Engineering & Operational Excellence across our technology teams. From production data analytics, to intelligent monitoring or incidents impact analysis, our team tackles engineering & operational challenges spanning many of our Starbucks technology products & services.

In this position, you will help define key metrics & strategic objectives for engineering & operational excellence across many independent teams, and manage a roadmap of technological investments in support of those strategic objectives. In keeping with Starbucks mission & values, we design, build, and nurture a technology ecosystem that elevates the Starbucks brand and grows our business by amplifying human connections, relationships, and experiences.  

To be successful, the Sr technical product manager needs to have significant technical acumen and experience with engineering & operational solutions across organizations, along with a passion for excellence & accountability, so we can truly delight customers with quality, reliable & performant products & services. You will also need strong collaboration, negotiation & relationship building skills, as we seek to influence tools adoption, engineering or operational practices across various teams and organizations, while collaborating in accordance with Starbucks guiding principles.

Summary of Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities and essential job functions include but are not limited to the following: 

Product Definition & Value

  1. Contributes innovative business capabilities and customer features informed by technology trends and business strategy to the product or service roadmap
  2. Translates customer experience and business strategy requirements into technical requirements
  3. Influences decisions by providing technical consultation and direction to stakeholders
  4. Influences and documents non-functional requirements including performance, scalability, resilience, usability, accessibility, security, and business continuity
  5. Collaborates with peer technology teams to align on solutions
  6. Represents customer experience context to engineering teams
  7. Creates acceptance criteria/requirements to align with customer, business, and technical strategy goals
  8. Leads prioritization of backlog
  9. Recommends new technology trends and innovative products/features to the team

Analysis & KPIs

  • Analyzes data and uses results to justify product decisions and apply key learnings
  • Defines product health and performance metrics and dashboard/reporting requirements, and KPIs to measure performance against feature goals
  • Identifies opportunities to improve feature performance and overall product health using data
  • Leads ongoing improvements to product performance

Leadership & Communication

  • Partners with engineering teams to apply knowledge/expertise in defining technical requirements and solution architecture, and understands technical debt and non-functional features to prioritize appropriately
  • Owns effective relationships with engineering teams across Starbucks Technology
  • Interacts directly with business stakeholders to understand business issues and to communicate ramifications of technical options
  • Eliminates ambiguity in feature criteria and goals
  • Presents solution options/recommendations clearly and persuasively to support business stakeholder decisions
  • Influences & negotiates with teams across Starbucks Technology, with business partners, and with third-party vendors and resolves most issues independently
  • Leads team members and peers in learning technical skills and business acumen
  • Act as coach and mentor to team members

Product Planning & Delivery

  • Identifies and documents technical tradeoffs as well as dependencies and constraints
  • Presents recommendations and influences alignment across neighbor ST teams
  • Performs validation of feature against stated goals; facilitates user review/acceptance testing
  • Works with cross-functional engineering teams on feature sizing and delivery planning
  • Practices iterative, agile development- Create epics, user stories, and partner with ST Product Management on acceptance criteria (ensure proper tagging, scalability, etc.) 
  • Identifies and documents technical tradeoffs as well as dependencies and constraints
  • Performs validation of feature against stated goals; facilitates user review/acceptance testing
  • Manages execution and eliminates blocking issues during development 
  • Works with cross-functional teams on feature sizing and delivery planning
  • Effective communications of product delivery milestones and progress 
  • Acts as a liaison between vendors and business
  • Partner with delivery teams on release planning
  • Leads documentation of “to be” state i.e. API contracts including reconciliation and error handling, data flow diagrams and data mapping documents
  • Partner with Engineering and UX on Design and Prototypes to support hypothesis for new feature discovery
  • Track progress on KPIs and OKRs
  • Triage and facilitate bug resolution and prioritization and timing by partnering with ST Product Management, Engineering, vendors and across ST as needed
  • Facilitate/Participate in Backlog Refinement, Sprint Planning, Sprint Retrospective and Sprint Demos
  • Ensure sprint plan aligns with Product Roadmap and Sprint Goals
