Not only will you ensure the proper sterilization of instruments and equipment, you will also help to facilitate change by recommending areas for improvement, expanding your knowledge of the Sterile Technician’s role and sharing your expertise with new staff members.

Maintains high level of knowledge of medical/surgical supplies, linen, instrumentation and equipment carried by the department so that most questions can be answered in a phone call.

Demonstrates knowledge of and compliance with all system/hospital/department policies and procedures.

Assists in the maintenance of department policy and procedure manuals.

Reports unsafe or broken equipment.

Assists in locating supplies.

Maintains appropriate inventory control practices.

Ensures instruments are repaired and ordered in a timely manner.

Coordinates equipment maintenance.

Coordinates assignments and activities.

Maintains efficient operations of department.

Maintains familiarity with union contract.

Schedules staff meetings and employee work schedules.

Assists with performance reviews and makes recommendations regarding employment and corrective action.

Assists with training and coaching of new and current employees.

Coordinates departmental in-services.

Tracks CQI monitors and follows up as appropriate.

Monitors department’s LPMs.

Assists with and maintains departmental statistics and documentation.

Assists with bi-weekly and monthly statistical reporting.

Maintains sterilizer testing documentation and preventive maintenance records.

Supervises the Loans and Borrows process.

Maintains department education documentation.

Serves as liaison between the Central Sterile department and other departments.



High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate’s degree or equivalent experience preferred.


Minimum two years of experience in sterile processing, distribution, and inventory control or two years of Operating Room experience.
