Formulations Research Associate

The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) is a Seattle-based non-profit research organization committed to developing products to prevent, detect and treat infectious diseases. IDRI translates basic research to develop vaccines, diagnostics and drugs for applications in global health. IDRI's leadership in the global health community extends to international alliances and partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, universities, research institutes, governments, and public health organizations.


In this interdisciplinary lab-based role, the research associate will be a member of the Adjuvant Formulations group and will be responsible for carrying out immunological assays. This position will work towards advancing multiple projects simultaneously and may be required to assist with formulation and/or animal model work.


  • Set up and execute immunological assays in support of contract and internal R&D work.
  • Develop or refine immune assays to support internal or contract work.
  • Characterize adjuvant stability samples for R&D inventory.
  • Carefully document and record experimental processes and results.
  • Support cross-functional projects (including animal model and formulation work) as needed.
  • Process and/or analyze experimental results and effectively communicate results to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve experimental equipment and processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline in the physical and/or life sciences preferred
  • 2+ years of academic or industry laboratory experience
  • Experience in sterile technique and cell culture (human/mammalian), including primary tissue culture
  • Running and developing plate and cell based immune assays (including but not
  • limited to ELISA, Flow Cytometry etc.)
  • Basic proficiency in Excel and/or other data analysis tools
  • Familiarity with formulation techniques, such as liposomes/lipid particles, emulsions, polymer systems, lyophilization etc.
  • Familiarity with physical characterization techniques for small molecules/formulations including (but not limited to): HPLC, LCMS, DLS etc.
  • Knowledge of advanced immunological techniques including: ELISpot, ICS, IHC
  • Experience working with established mouse models (blood sampling, tissue sampling, IM/IP injection, primary cell isolation etc.)
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • Proven history of successful problem solving and critical thinking
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to successfully adapt to switching priorities
