  • SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Surgery Manager and or Charge Nurse, and Registered
Nurse designated patient care provider, performs a variety of duties preparing for,
assisting during, and cleaning up after surgical procedures. Provides patient care in
accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and standards of care.
  • JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE /QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent successful completion of approved school of surgical technology.

A minimum of one (1) year of hospital experience is preferred. (Requires on-the-job multi-component training.)

Strong skills in oral and written communication, customer service, organization, decision

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares operating room with equipment, instruments, and supplies in accordance with procedure and preference card.

  • May function as a scrub tech or assist with circulating duties under direct supervision of Registered Nurse. Does NOT function as first assistant in a procedure.

  • Actively participates in TIME OUT prior to incision/procedure start.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon/first assistant; and handles the instruments, supplies and equipment utilized during the surgical procedure.

  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of aseptic technique and maintains the sterile field.

  • Operates equipment as applicable, including sterilizers.

  • Monitors correct usage of equipment and supplies.

  • Acquires additional supplies and equipment during operation as required.

  • Assists with positioning and bed transfers of patient using proper body mechanics and safety.

  • Maintains a safe environment for patients and personnel by utilizing and enforcing principals of infection control and safety practices, including universal precautions.

  • Must be able to work and communicate with physicians, staff and other departments in a courteous, diplomatic manner during high stress situations.

  • Maintains order in work area during procedures.

  • Assists physician with splint or cast application.

  • Assists with cleansing wounds and applying dressings.

  • Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts according to policy.

  • Performs a Hand-off Communication before relief of duties, for example lunch or end of shift.

  • Handles specimens appropriately and according to policy.

  • Performs decontamination of instruments and equipment according to standards of practice.

  • Maintains and restocks supplies and equipment.

  • Must be able to take on-call duties with the expectation to respond within 20 minutes.

  • Assists in maintaining operative records and preference cards.

  • Participates in the department’s Performance Improvement Plan as appropriate to the job responsibilities, including Quality Measures and Customer Service Measures.

  • Initiates emergency calls when needed.

  • Responds quickly to emergency situations and initiates CPR if needed.

  • Maintains competency through departmental and organizational core competencies.

  • Completes all required education and keeps education file up to date.

  • Maintain accurate time card system entries for hours worked, on call and requested time off.

  • Demonstrates commitment to the Department’s goals and to the Organization’s mission, vision, and values.

  • Performs job responsibilities in a manner consistent with CMH’s Behavioral Expectations and Service Commitments (Corporate Compliance).

  • Performs clerical duties as assigned.

  • Answers the phone promptly and courteously and takes messages as appropriate

  • Performs all other duties as required or requested by the Manager and / or Charge Nurse.

  • CORPORATE COMPLIANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

Understands and adheres to all compliance standards.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The position requires a considerable amount of physical work up to 50 pounds. Any work load exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance. The individual will be required to pull up or reposition patients. The individual must be able to bend, stoop, kneel crouch, push and pull to perform certain duties of this position. The individual must also be able to maneuver throughout halls, stairways, and patient rooms in response to hospital emergencies. Interpretation of environmental input requires visual and auditory skills. In the event there is a need to evacuate the building, heavy lifting will be required to carry patients to safety.
  • WORK ENVIRONMENTS
The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in a temperature controlled environment with varying exposure to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position may have exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.
