Summary:

The EHSS Specialist will work directly with functional area and the EHSS Operations Team. The Specialist will be responsible for partnering with staff from R&D, Manufacturing and other sites as needed, to promote a strong EHSS culture, execute company EHSS policies and programs, and ensure compliance to all applicable local, state, regional and/or federal regulations. This position requires a high degree of flexibility and basic EHSS program knowledge.

Translates and integrates company and functional strategies into tactical plans and guidelines.  This position will work closely with Research Associates, Scientists, and REF staff to identify and resolve research and operational needs. 

Assist in compliance with all federal, regional, state, and local EHSS regulations. Support the EHSS site leads and provide EHSS customer support. Follow and implement all management system requirements, including adherence to standards.

Principal Responsibilities:

  • Assist the site leads in the overall development, evaluation, administration, and implementation of EHSS policies and programs.
  • Implements and administers the Seagen hazardous chemical waste program
  • Oversees the onsite hazardous waste services contract for hazardous waste collection, shipment, and laboratory/equipment decontamination, as well as other services as required
  • Assists in the development and deployment of hazardous materials response plans, training, and preparedness activities
  • Prepares monthly wastewater reports for manufacturing facility and serves as primary point of contact for wastewater permitting activities
  • Serves as key contact for transportation and shipment of hazardous materials and wastes in accordance with DOT and IATA standards
  • Maintains the Hazardous Materials and Emergency Response training plans to ensure timely completion and accurate record keeping of training records
  • Maintains current and accurate records to support the dangerous waste, biomedical waste, and universal waste programs
  • Implements program for monitoring and disposal of high-hazard chemicals used in chemistry labs
  • Develops and leads program for laboratory/equipment decontamination services
  • Represents Seagen during EHSS regulatory inspections and preparing regulatory reports including annual dangerous waste reports, annual pollution prevention plans, and EPCRA Tier II reports
  • Supports the Radiation Safety and X-Ray Safety Programs as needed for waste management, routine surveys, and inspections
  • Participates in the safety committee inspection program
  • Works within  team  to ensure the health and safety training program meets or exceeds regulatory requirements; may develop and present safety training within scope of the position responsibility and individual expertise
  • Supports the EHSS program through monitoring of EHSS inbox, participation in the monthly facility safety inspections, accurate and timely management of all EHSS records, and other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Safety, or Biology plus 2 years of experience in Environmental, Health, Safety & Sustainability, or related field.
  • Minimum 2 years managing hazardous waste in a laboratory or similar setting
  • Strong understanding of Chemical and Biological development (GMP and non-GMP) and laboratory operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior biotech experience desired
  • Previous experience and current training for RCRA Dangerous Waste (WAC 173-303) and DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171-177)
  • 40-hour HAZWOPR initial and current refresher training
  • Familiar with pertinent international, federal, state, and local regulatory requirements
  • Must be able to achieve results with limited direction and guidance, demonstrating independent judgment in selecting options for obtaining solutions to overcome challenges
  • Organizational skills, excellent written and oral communication skills and self-motivation are required
  • Some after-hours and weekend work may be required
