SVP Development

The SVP of Development 's primary aim is to increase philanthropic support from all sources, with a particular focus on building a sustainable, robust major gifts program -- from individual and institutional donors. The successful candidate will be a dynamic and accomplished individual with excellent communication and collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization and with the Board of Trustees to produce superior results. They will be a proven leader with strategic thinking abilities, strong management skills, demonstrated success in major gift fundraising, a collaborative approach, and the personal energy, enthusiasm, and drive to motivate others and to mentor and rally a team to consistently surpass goals.

The SVP of Development reports to the President& CEO and will work closely with the Board of Trustees while staffing the Development Committee of the Board.


  • Raise annual operating revenue from all philanthropic sources (major donors, planned giving programs, special events, foundations, and government sources).
  • Develop long-range strategies to significantly increase philanthropic giving and serve as the key strategist for specific 'asks. '
  • Assign and monitor prospect portfolios for the CEO, staff, and board.
  • Craft compelling cases for support for unrestricted funding that maximize relationships with current donors and cultivate and convert new donors.
  • Serve as a front-line cultivator and solicitor. Cultivate and steward donors; make significant requests for support from major donors, board members, foundations and corporations.
  • Collaborate with the Membership team to achieve growth in major gifts through data mining the membership population and acquisition of new major gift donors.
  • Ensure comprehensive, timely and innovative stewardship of all gifts.
  • Effectively manage and organize the department 's day-to-day operations and budgets; streamline processes and procedures.
  • Leverage technology to analyze progress against plans, monitor expenses and cost-per dollar raised and to ensure security of all donor records.

Trustee Relations

  • Serve as the primary liaison between the management team the Board of Trustees.
  • Responsible for building a strong partnership with Trustees and leveraging the Board to advance NYPR 's fundraising activities.
  • Primary liaison with the Development Committee and the Governance Committee of the Board of Trustees, working closely with the chairs of those committees and the Chair of the Board of Trustees.
  • Provide support to Board members in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of their portfolios of prospective major donors

Team Leadership

  • Develop a diverse and highly skilled staff that is well-prepared to meet the ongoing challenges of a first-rate mission-driven institution.
  • Establish goals in a collaborative manner to ensure that team members have responsibility and ownership for the successful outcomes.
  • Nurture and mentor the development team, provide opportunities to enhance their skills.

  • Facilitate clear, transparent communication within the department and throughout the institution.
  • Serve as a collegial and participatory member of the organization 's senior management team.


  • A deep appreciation and passion for the mission and aspirations of NYPR.
  • At least 15 years of progressively responsible professional experience in development / fundraising. Experience in a media organization or cultural institution is a plus.
  • Experience leading all aspects of Development including capital campaigns, major and planned giving, foundation and corporate fundraising, event planning, prospect research, and stewardship; experience completing a successful capital campaign.
  • Proven ability to build a cohesive, high-performing staff and work teams and to develop the skills and nurture growth of staff members.
  • Ability to work effectively with the President/CEO, senior team member, trustees, staff and donors, and provide motivation at all levels of the organization.
  • High energy, entrepreneurial drive, creativity, flexibility, and results-orientation.
  • A demonstrated track record of working effectively with trustees, building strong relationships, inspiring them to action on behalf of the organization and engaging them as fundraisers and donors on behalf of the organization.
  • Excellent communication skills '"both oral and written.
  • A quick-study '"able to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the New York City and national funding communities.
