JOB ANNOUNCEMENT:

Telecommunicator I

Morgan County Public Safety Dispatch is accepting applications for Telecommunicator Level 1.

This position is a full-time position. This position works shifts in a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation that will include weekends, holidays and overtime.

Receives emergency 911 calls, determines nature of call, gathers the maximum amount of information in the minimum amount of time, and determines appropriate response and dispatches response of emergency personnel using CAD (Computer Aided Dispatch).

Provides pre-arrival instruction to the caller prior to arrival of emergency personnel, as needed. Work is performed in accordance with established departmental guidelines and State and Federal regulations.

Answers and processes non-emergency administrative calls, obtaining information and referring call to the proper authority.

Operates computer aided dispatch system CAD (Motorola Flex), operates and monitors radio consoles, dispatches and maintains location and status of all in-service and on call law enforcement, fire, EMS personnel and equipment.

Applicants should possess a High school diploma or GED. Applicants should have the ability to obtain and maintain specific certifications, including, but not limited to: IDACS/NCIC Full Operator, Emergency Medical Dispatch, Law Enforcement Dispatch, Fire Service Dispatch, CPR & AED.

Ability to deal with sensitive information in a discreet and professional manner. Remain alert, calm and courteous under extreme situations and relay information to first responders in a timely fashion. Ability to effectively listen, comprehend and communicate with a wide variety of individuals during various situations, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities. Ability to properly use maps, acronyms, codes and radio frequencies.

Applicant maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, all law enforcement agencies, all fire and EMS departments, all jails and prisons, all hospitals, DNR, all street and highway Departments, railroads, utility companies, Coroner, and members of the public, for purposes of giving and receiving information, training personnel, and rendering service.

Dispatcher from External Agency: New employee could receive up to the lesser of 50% credit for the completed years of their applicable full-time experience, or 10 years. Years of service for the purpose of this calculation shall be rounded down to the nearest whole number. The credit of years would apply only to the employee’s status in the dispatch salary matrix. For the purposes of PTO they would be considered a first-year employee and a Level-I Telecommunicator. At the end of a one-year probationary period, the employee may be evaluated to a Level-II or Level-III Telecommunicator if their certifications and experience are commensurate with the respective positions. Years of service with the county and shift-bidding are based on actual years of service with the County and department respectively, and is unaffected by the employee’s placement in the salary matrix. Determination of the years to be counted towards the employee’s position in the pay matrix is at the discretion of the director and shall be presented to the employee in their offer letter.

Applicant performs duties in an emergency call center, involving sitting/walking at will, standing for long periods, driving, lifting/carrying objects weighing between 25 and 50 pounds, reaching, bending, crouching/kneeling, close/far vision, color/depth perception, keyboarding, speaking clearly, hearing sounds/communication and handling/grasping objects. Applicant is frequently exposed to stressful situations associated with emergency requests for assistance and typically performs duties in a restricted seated position with little or no opportunity for breaks during shift.

Applicant works shifts in a 24-hour a day, 7 day a week operation that includes day, evening, and/or overnight shifts. Applicant may work weekends, holidays, and overtime.

Applicant occasionally travels out of town for required meetings/training, but not overnight.
