Media Relations Specialist

Philabundance was founded in 1984 with the simple belief that no one should go hungry while healthy food goes to waste. Our mission is to drive hunger from our communities today as we work to end hunger for good. In addition to food distribution, we strive to reduce food waste, increase access to nutritious meals, and tackle the root causes of hunger through programs such as the Philabundance Community Kitchen.

Philabundance provides food to more than 350 partners – such as shelters, emergency kitchens, senior centers – and at locations where people access other services, including hospitals, libraries, and schools. We do this in five counties in Pennsylvania: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia, and four counties in New Jersey: Burlington, Camden, Gloucester and Salem.

Position Summary:

Philabundance seeks an enthusiastic Media Relations Specialist to join the communications and marketing team. The Media Relations Specialist will work closely with the Director of Communications and Marketing to craft creative and effective communications strategies and content to help achieve fundraising goals, educate the public about the dynamic work of Philabundance, and ensure the people we serve know where they can find food.

The Media Relations Specialist is involved in all aspects of the development and implementation of Philabundance media-based communication strategies. The Media Relations Specialist is responsible for promoting and protecting Philabundance reputation by developing and executing media and public relations strategies through the use of various media outlets in collaboration with the communications and marketing team. The candidate should be able to work with all levels of personnel and be able to work independently as well as within a team.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Ensure Philabundance protects and promotes its image in a proper, coordinated, and consistent manner.
  • Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships within the press and publicity community.
  • Identify potential items for the media and proactively pitch stories.
  • Gather and disseminate timely information to press and staff.
  • Manage day-to-day media relations/media requests.
  • Create effective communication channels.
  • Act as a media spokesperson on behalf of Philabundance and address questions and complaints.
  • Work with the events team to plan and oversee press events.
  • Detect public relations issues as they emerge and address them directly.
  • Assemble press kits.
  • Compose and edit press releases, company literature, and articles for internal and external use.
  • Develop written materials including press releases, Q&A, media standby statements on Philabundance and issues related to our mission
  • Develop talking points and messaging for senior leadership.
  • Maintain an updated media crisis management plan for Philabundance use.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
  • 3-8 years' experience working in a Media Relations role or in Public Relations.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with strong writing and editorial abilities.
  • Ability to pitch to media.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, internet, wire services, media monitoring software, and other public relation tools.
  • Demonstrated success with Social Media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others.
  • Must possess strong project management skills and be highly organized.
  • Must be able to meet tight deadlines and execute flawlessly on projects in a fast-paced, often pressured environment and see a project through to completion.
  • Ability to attend events and other media opportunities on behalf of Philabundance.
  • Travel may be required.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Work in a seated position up to 8 hours a day, 5 days a week
  • May be required to work some weekends and evenings
  • See, hear, and speak with sufficient capability to perform assigned tasks
  • Lift/lower, push/pull and carry objects/parcels no greater than 50 pounds; when lifting/lowering, pushing/pulling and carrying objects/parcels greater than 50 pounds use 2 people or mechanical means
  • Occasional travel to other Philabundance/sites as needed and required
  • Demonstrate cognitive ability to:
  • Follow directions and routines
  • Concentrate, memorize, and recall
  • Identify logical connections and determine sequence of response
  • Process up to 2-3 steps ahead
  • Evaluate problems and escalate / inform Management as necessary
