Grant Accountant

Clayton Services, a leading staffing and recruiting firm, is searching for a Grant Accountant to join a thriving non-profit organization in North Houston. The Grant Accountant will be responsible for preparing financial information needed for grant applications and monthly expense allocations.

Grant Accountant Responsibilities:

  • Oversee government grants administration, compliance, and reporting
  • Preparing financial information needed for grant applications and monthly expense allocations, as well as documentation requested during monitoring reviews by grant agencies.
  • Tracking expense variances to the approved grant budget to determine any necessary budget revision submissions and communicating with departments to resolve questionable expenditures.
  • Preparing invoices to grant agencies on a timely basis as required by regulation or contractual agreement in coordination with departments.
  • Preparing and reconciling all financial status reports for grant projects in specific departments as assigned, such that the reports are accurate, reviewed by the Controller, and submitted to the granting agency on a timely basis.
  • Submitting grant budget revisions as required.
  • Attending annual mandatory grant workshops as necessary.
  • General ledger functions as assigned.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processing and reporting efficiencies (Continuous Improvement).
  • Assisting with monthly and annual financial closings.
  • Assisting with the preparation of the annual budget in coordination with the CFO, Controller, and Program Directors.
  • Assisting with the annual audit by independent CPAs, including preparation of audit schedules and work papers.
  • Cross-training on other accounting department positions as determined by CFO and/or Controller.
  • Attending all staff meetings and staff events as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Grant Accountant Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work with accounting software
  • Computer proficiency
  • Microsoft Office - Word and Excel proficiency
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periods, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Grant Accountant Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree OR 1-2 years related experience/training OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience working with Blackbaud Financial Edge software, a plus
  • Non-profit experience highly desired
