Accounting Coordinator

Brown & James, P.C. is a full service litigation firm with multiple locations. We have an immediate opening in our St. Louis, MO office for a full-time Accounting Manager.

Responsibilities and essential duties:

· Ensure that day to day activities are completed timely and accurately by performing the work and overseeing/supervising the work of the accounting department, which consists of six employees. Day to day activities include, but are not limited to, the following: financial and tax reporting, accounts receivable, billing and collections, payroll and fringe benefits, general ledger and trust accounting, fixed asset records, accounts payable and disbursements, and facilities management.

· Prepare bank, credit card and other account reconciliations.

· In partnership with our outside accounting firm, ensure accuracy and compliance with income tax, use tax, property tax, payroll tax and other state tax filings.

· Maintain systems and controls that verify the integrity of all systems, processes and data.

· Adhere to established accounting policies and procedures.

· Respond to partners as assigned with accurate and timely reports to facilitate their needs.

· Participate in a wide variety of special projects and compile a variety of special reports.

· Communicate with partners, co-workers, clients and others in a courteous and professional manner.

· Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures and instructions.

· Assist in preparation of annual budget and forecasts.

· Ensure all accounting records are intact, readily accessible and safeguarded.

· The position directly supervises six employees in the Accounting Department and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems in cooperation with Human Resources.

Works directly with and reports to the Chief Operating Officer.


· BA/BS in Accounting or related field.

· 3-10 years of accounting/bookkeeping experience.

· Law firm experience preferred.

· High level of proficiency with Microsoft Excel.

· Surepoint software experience a plus.

· Self-directed individual that knows what needs to be done and operates with a sense of urgency, focus and discipline.

· Able to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative, entrepreneurial environment.

· Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

· Proven ability to exercise good judgment, be highly organized, show initiative and be proactive.

· Thorough understanding of accounting principles, financial forecasts and budgets.

· Ability to work with outside advisors when accounting, tax, and/or legal guidance is needed.

· Above all, possess the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality to handle sensitive information.
