The Behavioral Health Staffing Resource Registered Nurse is a highly skilled professional nurse motivated by the challenge of providing care to patients in varied inpatient settings throughout the network. This professional must possess a mental health nursing skill set, be flexible with their assignments, and have the ability to travel to anywhere inpatient Behavioral Health services are rendered. The Behavioral Health Registered Nurse (RN) delivers nursing care for patients across their life span, and through the nursing process, assesses, plans, implements, coordinates, evaluates and documents the effects of care. The RN works cooperatively with ancillary, nursing and other patient-team personnel to maintain standards for professional nursing practice. The nursing functions of the RN are carried out according to the Pennsylvania Professional Nurse Law, Pennsylvania Code Title 49 Professional & Vocational Standards, hospital policy, the hospital Mission Statement, and the hospital Philosophy of Nursing. Additionally, as applicable must carry out these functions in accordance with the New Jersey Nurse Practice Act.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated.

Performs assessment of the mental and physical status of all assigned patients.

Implements, evaluates, and documents patient care interventions and patient responses in accordance with hospital policy.

Formulates collaborative and individualized plan of care and identifies expected patient outcomes, using the nursing process.

Implements, evaluates and documents patient care interventions and effectiveness in accordance with care plan.

Assesses patient/family learning needs and provides and documents psycho-educational interventions by utilizing a variety of therapeutic programming modalities (patient education groups, individual sessions, etc.).

Demonstrates appropriate knowledge base of psychopharmacology.

Demonstrates appropriate skill as a member of the Control Team, in responding to agitation/violent behavior of individuals requiring verbal de-escalation and/or physical restraint.

 Demonstrates competence in caring for the patient requiring restraints or seclusion.

 Collaborates with others to complete job duties as appropriate, is open to considering and offering new ideas and approaches to doing things. Organizes, coordinates and prioritizes patient care consistently utilizing available resources.

 Collaborate with other caregivers to assure appropriate staffing levels on all shifts.

 Functions as a professional role model and resource person providing guidance to co- workers. Directly supervises and is accountable for the care provided by the Mental Health Technician and all other ancillary staff. Complies with established chain of command for work related problems. Maintains records for administrative and regulatory purposes.

Maintains responsibility for own professional development through active participation in in-services and/or continuing education programs.

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. 

Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). 

Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes, and practices.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Sit up to 2 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; 4 hours at a time. Walk up to 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Consistently lift, carry and push objects up to 10 pounds. Frequently lift, carry and push objects up to 75 pounds. Transport patients weighing up to 250 lbs. via wheelchair, bed and/or stretcher with assistance when appropriate. Consistently pull up to 10 lbs. frequently pull up to 250 lbs. with assistance when appropriate. Frequently stoop and bend, crouch, kneel and climb. Frequently reach above shoulder level. Occasional crawling Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Frequently finger and handle objects. Occasionally firmly grasp, twist, and turn objects with hands and fingers. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and visual monotony (e.g. computer screen).

EDUCATION:

Graduate of a Professional Nursing program.  Registered Nurse with a current license to practice in the State of Pennsylvania and/ or New Jersey. Upon hire must seek licensure through reciprocity in either Pennsylvania or New Jersey (whichever is needed) prior to campus specific clinical orientation. 

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: 

Two years of previous psychiatric, medical, and / or geriatric nursing experience preferred.  ANCC certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing preferred. Evidence of successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS).  Individualized orientation program and cross campus training requirements.
