The Lead Barista is responsible for opening or closing the campus espresso bar and running the day-to-day operation. This position acts as shift supervisor for other baristas and helps with scheduling and covering shifts, assists with inventory, ordering, and loss management, and in troubleshooting equipment. This position provides high-quality customer service and professionalism to both internal and external guests at Tacoma Community College campus.

Essential Functions

  • Ensures excellent customer service is given to every customer, resolves complaints when they arise
  • Prepares Inventory for Espresso bar, assists with ordering supplies
  • Ensures the stand is clean, well-stocked, and organized
  • Helps with a weekly schedule of Baristas
  • Assists with cost analysis/cost control by determining cost per serving of drinks, and ensuring all baristas are using supplies appropriately
  • Brings in new ideas for drinks, food, or services
  • Monitors perishable and non-perishable inventory numbers and reports cafe needs to the Director.
  • Regularly prepares a variety of espresso drinks and non-espresso beverages using equipment such as coffee grinders, brewers; espresso machines, blenders, etc.
  • Follows standard recipes or customized recipes for customers, including recipe changes such as temperature, quantity of ingredients or substituted ingredients.
  • Operates a POS cash register and handles various types of money including cash, student pay cards, and credit cards.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace including sanitizing all utensils, equipment, mopping, and sweeping per shift.
  • If applicable, monitors perishable and non-perishable inventory numbers and reports cafe needs to the lead barista.
  • Performs cafe opening and closing procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Experience working as a barista
  • Experience overseeing people in any setting (paid or volunteer).
  • Excellent customer service

Preferred Qualifications
  • Some college preferred in a culinary arts or business program.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successfully pass a criminal history background check prior to employment.
  • Ability to move and carry items up to 30 pounds.
  • Must maintain state health standards and have a current Food Handlers Permit.
  • Proof of completed COVID-19 Vaccination is required upon hiring and employment at TCC.

  • Communicates information to the Director of Bookstore and Food Services to ensure that all guest needs are met in a timely manner.
  • Follows all verbal and written operational policies and procedures as directed by the Director of Bookstore and Food Services.

Terms of Employment
This is a part time hourly position scheduled to up to 17 hours per week. The rate of pay is $20.00 to $25.00 per hour DOE/DOQ. Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet department needs and some early morning, evening or weekend hours may be required.
