Safety Specialist

Review, evaluate, and analyze work environments and project safety in conjunction with supervisory personnel.   Design, modify, and coordinate safety programs and procedures to control, eliminate, and prevent injury and disease.  Facilitate the enforcement of adherence to laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals and comply with corporate safety program standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Safety/Hazard Recognition & Elimination:

  • Identify safety hazards and the methods to eliminate them; coach others
  • Help ensure leadership in all job-site meetings, formal and informal, will begin with safety.
  • Gain knowledge of the 30/22 OSHA skill sets, eventually teach them.
  • Practice safety hazard identification and elimination in personal life.

Prevention:

  • Prevent hazardous working conditions and unsafe employee activities through safety management and contacting supervisory personnel.
  • Examine jobsites, departments, and branches to assess and determine where safety improvements are needed.
  • Positively impact company performance by focusing on first line supervisors.  Facilitate hazard recognition and solutions.
  • Respond, as a resource of information, to supervisors' questions and issues regarding safety.
  • Develop ideas as to the source of unsafe behaviors and working environments.  Recommend measures to ensure maximum employee protection.
  • Facilitate the ordering of necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Communication:

  •  Ensure that the company is staying abreast new safety issues in the industry in order to react and implement adjustments as soon as possible.
  • Participate in operations' meetings to instruct employees in matters pertaining to occupational health and accident prevention.
  • Converse clearly and regularly with management, supervisors, and field personnel to perform the essential responsibilities of this position.

Compliance:

  • Facilitate the assurance that all laws and regulations governing the health and safety of individuals are followed.  Provide communication to supervisors to allow for this abidance.
  • Review documentation to ensure all required records and reports are complete, accurate, and submitted per requirements and established procedures.  Implement appropriate corrective action as needed.

 Training:

  • Identify additional training warranted through needs assessments; OTI classes, DBI...etc.

Investigation:

  •  Investigate injuries and accidents to determine and communicate root causes to upper management.
  • Collaborate with supervisor on work comp claims management to minimize company exposure.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Occupational Safety and Health- or working towards.  
  • Construction emphasis preferred.  
  • Prior internship or work experience involving safety or leadership required.  
  • Advanced knowledge and ability to research and enforce all federal, state, local, and company safety regulations required.  
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and collaboratively implement essential measures.  Proficient interpersonal, communication, computer, and organizational skills are necessary.
