Referral Responder completes timely responses to viable organ referrals during assigned shift. This includes, but not limited to, receiving updates on patient condition and plan of care, reviewing hospital EMR for clinical status updates, communicating updates to Triage Coordinator and  effectively interacting with hospital staff to develop and implement a communication plan. During the on-site response, the Referral Responder will also educate nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel, in real time, to increase their knowledge of organ and tissue donation.

  1. Completes timely response to viable organ referrals, understanding that presence is vital to GOLM's mission.  Approaches families, as appropriate, for the discussion of organ and tissue donation with the next of kin and secures written authorization when indicated.
    1. Collaborates with the hospital's health care team to determine their plan of care and collects information that will help others in the clinical division determine organ donation potential.
    2. Looks for opportunities to move the organ donation process forward with every visit.
    3. When appropriate, begins early interaction with families that may lead to the discussion of organ and tissue donation.
    4. When the opportunity presents, secures authorization for organ and tissue donation as defined by Gift of Life Michigan policy.
    5. Supports other GOLM on-site staff by facilitating health care team contacts, tests, and procedures to limit barriers to the donation process.
    6. Communicates directly with the Triage Coordinator (TC) and/or Clinical Administrator On-Call (CAOC) with updates on each case to determine GOLM's plan for continued response to the referral.
    7. Maintains proper documentation during the donation process and provides necessary data to maintain organizational records.
  2. Conducts timely referral and donor follow-up to assigned hospitals.
  3. Provides information to the Gift of Life clinical staff regarding post referral/recovery feedback and overall donor status within the hospital.
  4. Maintains accurate documentation of all hospital development activities according to department protocols.
  5. Meets yearly goals and objectives as outlined in the hospital development performance standards.
  6. Develops, implements and oversees, with the hospital development leadership team, a training curriculum and resource manual for new hospital development staff.
  7. In consultation with the hospital development leadership team, develops organ and tissue information and promotional materials for hospital staff ongoing training needs.
  8. Maintains awareness of current health care literature concerning organ and tissue donation.
  9. Pursues continued professional development through formal educational programs and mentoring opportunities.
  10. Participates in committees, as available, within the HD department or Gift of Life Michigan.
  11. Collaborates with the health care team to assist families in locating available assistance for personal, social, spiritual needs regardless of their decision about donation.
  12. Participates in quality improvement opportunities for Gift of Life Michigan to improve process and opportunities to increase organ and tissue donation.
  13. Stays current and involved in national and regional collaborative opportunities for the OPO community.

This position is remote in that it is not located in our Ann Arbor office, however, regular travel to surrounding hospitals is required.


A bachelor's degree in marketing or a related field, and a minimum of two years hospital or marketing experience is preferred.

Able to work alternate hours immediately responding to referrals and other situations requiring their presence and expertise.  Must possess patience and comfort for the death and dying process, observed comprehension of the donation process and documentation requirements, and demonstrated quality improvement success.
