Medical Laboratory Scientist Intern

Completes educational assignments independently according to established schedule. Testing scores to maintain an 80% or better. Performs waived, moderate and highly complex laboratory tests according to policy and procedure under the supervision of an assigned mentor. Learns problem-solving skills with a willingness to troubleshoot quality control and instrumentation issues. Performs special assignments as delegated to enhance experience and skills of a medical laboratory scientist.

The intent of this job description is to provide a summary of the major duties and responsibilities of this position and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS UNDER SUPERVISION:

1. Performs laboratory tests according to established protocols and procedures under supervision of assigned technician.

2. Operates and performs maintenance on laboratory instrumentation per established policies and procedures under supervision of assigned technician.

3. Performs quality control testing and documents corrective action per established policy. 

4. Troubleshoots instrumentation with the aid of consulting technical services with proper documentation.

5. Follows established policies regarding accurate documentation of laboratory results in the laboratory information system, instrument records, and other quality assurance data under supervision of assigned technician.

6. Follows established policies regarding proper reporting and documentation of critical values under supervision of assigned technician.

7. Monitors inventory of supplies and orders supplies as necessary.  Keeps adequate inventory.  Monitors inventory so there is no wastage due to expiration of products.

8. Demonstrates competency and successful completion of program in assigned areas of specialty.

9. Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.

10. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.

11. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external).

12. Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety.

13. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices.

14. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code.

15. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment and knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the age of the patient treated (neonate, pediatric, adolescent or geriatric).

16. Organizes and prioritizes daily workload in order to complete assigned tasks in a timely fashion. Maintains a clean and orderly work area.

17. Handles multiple assignments as necessary, with an ability to adapt to changes.

18. Coordinates and cooperates with co-workers to promote a productive working environment.

19. Demonstrates effective communication skills by conveying necessary information accurately, listening effectively and asking pertinent questions. Performs AIDET.

20. Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:

Walking for up to six (6) hours in half-hour increments. Frequently uses fingers for typing data entry, and hands for processing specimens which includes twisting and turning specimen caps. Continuously uses upper extremities for transporting of specimens up to ten (10) pounds. Occasionally lifts, pushes or pulls from 26 to 50 pounds. Rarely stoops, bends or reaches above shoulder level. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation. Seeing as it relates to general far/near/color vision, peripheral vision and visual monotony.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelors Degree in Biology and/or Chemistry required.
