Research Assistant - Early Childhood Learning and Development

Position Description

As a Research Assistant in Early Childhood Learning and Development, you will support assessment and research projects related to early learning and care for children. You will work with our team's data manager to implement existing systems and procedures for tracking study participation; carry out data entry and data cleaning; conduct analyses; and build data visualizations to communicate results.

Serving as a core member of our data team, the Research Assistant will advance WestEd's commitment to equity through contributions to assessment and research projects that inform policies and practices in early learning settings for children ages birth to 8, particularly children of color and those from historically marginalized groups. This role will focus on four key areas of research implementation: Data Cleaning and Analysis, Data Visualization, Participant Tracking, and Research Team Processes.

Data Cleaning and Analysis (50%)

  • Clean and organize data files for analysis using SPSS.
  • Run basic descriptive analysis, including frequencies, for data cleaning and preliminary analyses.
  • Implement procedures for entering data, cleaning data, and developing data codebooks.
  • Carry out data integrity checks.
  • Restructure and merge datasets, including data files from other sources.
  • Manipulate data files to create data subsets for analysis.

Participant Tracking (25%)

  • Track and monitor recruitment of teachers for research studies to ensure adherence to sampling requirements.
  • Implement procedures for collecting data, conducting data tracking, and follow-up with participants.

Data Visualization & Write-Up (20%)

  • Prepare data and create data tables, charts, and graphs.
  • Prepare data files to upload for data visualization.
  • Set up Tableau dashboards framework/templates.
  • May contribute to the writing and editing of methodology sections of the users' guides, data reports, and technical manuals, as appropriate.

Research Team Processes (5%)

  • Participate in project and data team meetings.

SPECIAL NOTICE REGARDING THE WORK LOCATION OF THIS POSITION Currently, all staff at WestEd are working from home until further notice. Once we return to offices, this position will be based in one of WestEd's offices. Candidates can submit a request to work from home.

What We're Looking For

To help us make a positive impact on early learning and care, we'll need someone who has:

  • Effectiveness setting up data files and implementing procedures for data tracking, entry, cleaning, and management for field-based data collection.
  • Bachelor's degree in early childhood education, early intervention, educational psychology, developmental psychology, or any field that provides experience to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of SPSS Windows or related statistical software (e.g., Stata, R) for data entry, data cleaning, basic data analysis and data management.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Applications: Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Other skills, abilities, and experiences of interest

  • Experience working as part of a racially, culturally, and linguistically diverse team.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Able to complete tasks independently with guidance from leadership and collaborate effectively with team members.
