Temporary Space Defense Engagement - 37514

Overview:

Alion Science and Technology is seeking a Defense Engagement Consultant to support The Defense Innovation Unit’s Space Portfolio. This candidate will have a strong understanding of the Space portfolio and connectivity to expected DIU beneficiaries within the Department of Defense (DoD). The ideal candidate will be deeply passionate about next generation transformational technologies and is seeking the autonomy for a leading role. This role will bring the most challenging DoD problems forward to DIU to be solved with emerging commercial technologies and lead the transition of these new capabilities across DoD beneficiaries. This position is temporary spanning from October to December with the ability to extend. This position is based out of Mountain View, CA.

Responsibilities:

  • The individual will be responsible for two primary roles: project sourcing (think business development) and project scaling and transitions (think sales).
  • The individual will be responsible for establishing and maintaining a current DoD market map of key DoD organizations related to the Space portfolio area; the individual is expected to grow and maintain close relationships with key POCs in these organizations.
  • The individual will support DIU Portfolio Directors (PDs) and Project Managers (PMs) by sourcing ideal problems from DoD beneficiaries and working closely with Project Managers to launch new projects and/or scale and transition existing projects.
  • The individual will support DIU PDs and PMs by evangelizing ongoing projects in execution to the DoD landscape of potential customers; this will be achieved by regular strategic outreach efforts (think marketing) to appropriate DoD entities
  • The individual will ensure new projects adequately involve a number of key DoD beneficiaries (beyond the primary funding DoD customer) to be involved in the project, and to include: DoD observers of the project, and DoD organizations and POCs that give the highest likelihood for a successful transition.
  • The individual will be a critical influencer to DIU on funding new projects, modifying existing projects, and supporting the DoD’s transition of technologies.
  • Ability to reach all levels (action officer to Sr level) of DoD beneficiary
  •  Ability to collect, review, refine, update problem statements
  •  Ability to create and maintain network of key POCs in DoD market/portfolio area
  •  Ability to review deal flow and participate in diligence of companies
  •  Ability to support PM in authoring SOOs/SOWs, identify/coordinate DoD facilities
  •  Ability to identify/coordinate transition paths / follow-on activities
  •  Ability to travel/attend USG and/or industry-focused events (e.g., conferences)

Professional Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or equivalent.
  • 12+ years’ experience in DoD with a preference for experience in rapid fielding, program management, technology and product development, and entrepreneurship / innovation.
  • Experience with technology transfer or exposure to government at intersection of DoD and commercial application.
  • Relationships with entrepreneurs and a passion for the world of start-ups and high-growth companies.
  • Technology and/or military operations background with a strong viewpoint on transformational technologies.
  • Instinct for identifying promising, high-growth businesses, and transformative entrepreneurs.
  • US Citizenship and a TS clearance with ability to obtain SCI
