Fairfield County - Gastroenterologist

SUMMARY

The Pediatric Gastroenterologist's primary responsibilities is to provide clinical services to patients in a competent, professional and ethical manner, in accordance with prevailing standards of medical practice, and provide leadership for the Gastroenterology clinical staff at the Fairfield County campus. Patient care responsibilities will focus on ambulatory care, though opportunities for in-patient activity are possible, if desired.

The role is a key contributing member of the GI leadership team and supports the development and execution of GI's long and short-term plans. The Pediatric Gastroenterologist will collaborate and partner with others including with additional faculty who will work locally on a weekly basis. Our nationally recognized Center for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) currently cares for over 800 active patients from around the region and is supported by dedicated clinical registered nurses, a registered nurse educator/concierge, full-time psychologists, several dietitians, and three research coordinators.

Participation in weekly didactics that include gastroenterology (GI) fellows, pediatric residents, medical students, and faculty is required. Involvement in active research programs that focus on IBD, eosinophilic esophagitis, and functional gastrointestinal disorders is encouraged.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

The specific responsibilities for this role include the following:

* Accountability for the development and maintenance of the clinical, professional and administrative activities in conjunction with the division head and business manager.

* Provide services in accordance with the assignment, coverage and on-call schedules determined by the division head. Schedules shall be designed to assure that all of the pediatric and medical needs of patients are met in a competent, timely and responsive manner on a continuous basis, twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week.

* Demonstrate knowledge of the age-related differences and needs of patients in appropriate, specific populations from neonate through adolescence and applies them to practice. Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.

* Complete and maintain, in a timely manner, adequate, legible and proper medical records with respect to all services rendered to patients.

* Educational responsibilities include participating in medical student, resident and fellow teaching in ambulatory and inpatient settings while seeing patients. Actively contribute to education of pediatric house staff and medical students. Provide educational sessions for staff, residents and fellows as well as referring physicians.

* Participate in, and comply with, all applicable policies and procedures of, including, without limitation, utilization review, billing and other requirements associated with the delivery of services under Medicare, Medicaid, other federal and state reimbursement programs, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, and the payment plan of any commercial insurer, health maintenance organization, preferred provider organization, accountable health plan, or other health benefit program.

* Maintain professional expertise through active involvement in professional organizations and continuing education programs. Encourage team members to adhere to professional standards and to expand competencies.

* Perform all services assigned in accordance with policies, procedures, rules and regulations established by Connecticut Children's.

* Demonstrate support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with Connecticut Children's standards.

Position Specific Role Responsibilities

* Actively work as a liaison to referring providers ensuring timely phone and visit consultation for patients.

* Assess and recommend off-site sources for needed patient care services not provided by the GI division; coordinate and integrate with other programs and clinical services, as well as within intra- and inter-departmental programs.

* Work collaboratively with others on program goals and planning/evaluation, including resource planning in partnership with the Business Manager.

* Collaborate with the quality lead in continuously assessing and improving the quality of care and services provided. Participate in quality improvement programs, as appropriate.

* Actively participate in relevant committees, either on a membership or ad hoc basis, which are responsible for the quality of patient care and services.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

* Provide leadership for the Gastroenterology clinical staff at the Fairfield County campus.

* Work actively with professional staff to address interpersonal issues affecting performance or work environment.

* Participate in orientation and continuing professional and/or clinical education of all professional clinical personnel in the department or service as requested.

* Coach clinical staff in supporting efforts to optimize appropriate reimbursement for Department services. Maintain cost-effective approach to clinical program management.

* Candidates must have an M.D. or D.O. degree, with at least 5 years of experience beyond fellowship.

* Demonstrated clinical competency with pediatric GI, related diseases, assessment, procedures and treatments, as evidence by board certification in GI and maintenance of credentials.

* Must possess sufficient clinical knowledge and experience to provide competent clinical and institutional standards of care.

* Must possess interpersonal skills to support a harmonious environment with team members, patients and families.

* Track record of successful quality clinical program implementation.

* Active scholarly program with publication history is a plus.

* Academic title at the University of Connecticut will be commensurate with academic credentials.
