Centralized Underwriter III (Business Banking)

Description

This position works closely with the Business Banking Line of Business to analyze and decision (approve, counter-offer, or decline) loan applications of the largest size and complexity within the assigned Line of Business. The position also works closely with Lines of Business and Clients on the renewal or modification of existing credits, and review of portfolios as assigned. The Underwriter ensures that loans are underwritten to comply with policy or that risks are appropriately mitigated and documented. Work is varied in nature with changing priorities, and requires UW to make sound decisions with respect to credit and scheduling.

Position Accountabilities

  • Primary responsibilities include working to ensure timely credit decisions on new money requests and portfolio renewals (Annual reviews, refinances, ACH renewals & workouts) within Atlantic Union Bank's risk profile. The Underwriter III position will be assigned loans requiring more in-depth underwriting and analysis due to structure or size.
  • Underwrite applications for new money and portfolio transactions in the assigned Line of Business. Cross train to assist in other Lines of Business
    • Analyze the appropriate repayment sources dependent on the Line of Business, Loan Size, and complexity of loan. Debt Service and credit reporting data will be evaluated on all requests, along with repayment sources that may be unique to the assigned Line of Business or loan application. Documents analyzed and considered may include, but are not limited to company financial reports, personal financial statements, credit reports, tax returns (with associated schedules), rent rolls, lease agreements, invoices, and contracts. Loans having higher risk or exposure may require underwriting of multiple repayment sources and evaluation of data unique to the specific loan request.
  • Maintain established service levels for productivity and quality of loan decisions
  • Perform quality assurance reviews to ensure required CDD and other regulatory requirements, including Certificates of Beneficial Ownership, are obtained or verified at underwriting
  • Work with Lines of Business to originate loan applications to ensure all necessary documents are collected and other information is documented, as needed
  • Make credit decisions that adhere to Atlantic Union Bank policies and product parameters
  • Identification, documentation and approval (or escalation for approval) of Policy Exceptions when properly mitigated to minimize risk of loss.
  • Participate in learning and development to acquire and maintain knowledge of the regulatory landscape and requirements to ensure proper compliance as Regulations and Atlantic Union Bank's policies and procedures evolve
  • The Underwriter III will provide coaching of other teammates to increase skill levels and effective underwriting
  • Ensure all loan applications are processed within Atlantic Union's compliance and fair lending framework

Organizational Relationship

This position reports to the Manager of Centralized Underwriting for the Business Banking line of business.

Position Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Education - Bachelor's degree preferred, Finance or business related
  • Experience -7 or more years' experience in loan underwriting and approval
  • Knowledge of drivers of credit decisioning in the assigned line of business (Consumer, Wealth Management, Small Business or Commercial Banking).
  • Experience in underwriting and approval of various loan products, including but not limited to unsecured, real-estate secured, and other secured products

  • Strong analytic skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced production environment
  • Ability to analyze credit worthiness using various sources
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a loan origination system
  • Understand fair lending requirements
  • Understand appraisals of collateral
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Products including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint or comparable programs
  • Ability to work effectively with other teammates in different parts of Atlantic Union Bank to meet the client's needs
