TMC Operator 1

Maldonado-Burkett, LLP (MB) is looking for an entry-level Traffic Management Center (TMC) Operator 1. TMC Operator 1 uses ITS devices such CCTV cameras and traffic detectors to monitor roadways within the City of Austin. Using project specific software, operators maintain an accurate real-time traffic incident status database and respond to traffic incidents. Occasionally, TMC Operators work on other MB projects out of the MB offices on Western Trails Boulevard. A preferred candidate will demonstrate an interest in intelligent transportation systems and have an associate degree (or higher) in science, engineering, or a related technical field.

Position Description – TMC Operator 1 will:

  • Manage traffic incidents and traffic signal information in accordance with applicable operating guidelines.
  • Detect and confirm scheduled or unscheduled traffic incidents and use the available information to adjust traffic signal schedules to account for changing roadway conditions.
  • Disseminate pertinent information to the public via Dynamic Message Signs, social media, email, and telephone communications.
  • Report and obtain traffic incident status information to and from partnering agencies.
  • Prepare detailed documentation and reporting of traffic incident status and traffic signal conditions in accordance with applicable operating guidelines.
  • Provide outstanding customer service when responding to customer calls.
  • Occasionally work on other projects for MB out of the MB office on Western Trails Boulevard.
  • Engage in on the job training.

  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in learning new computer programs while having experience with common computer programs such as Microsoft Office.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in reading, interpreting, and communicating technical information.
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to solve problems, prioritize duties, and complete required tasks effectively.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in learning troubleshooting techniques to resolve operational and technical issues.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in adapting to changing roadway conditions resulting from scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in learning principles, procedures, and techniques involved in incident management, congestion management, and traffic signal operations.
  • Demonstrate an ability to gather relevant information from a variety of sources and disseminate that information to city staff, city consultants, or customers via a variety of communication methods including two-way radios, social media, email, and phone calls.
  • Demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills including proper use of English diction, grammar, and spelling.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in working as part of a team while also having the ability to work independently on specific assignments.
  • Demonstrate a willingness and ability to provide a pleasant customer service experience.
  • Have a willingness and ability to work on weekends, holidays, and for extended hours during the week. This may include serving in an on-call capacity during TMC hours of operation.
  • Be organized, responsible, and timely.
  • Consistently demonstrate a positive and professional image.
  • Have a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate (GED).
  • Have one year of experience in a similar position.
  • Have one year of supervisory experience.
  • Have a valid driver's license.
  • Successfully pass a background check and drug test before beginning employment.
  • A preferred candidate will have:
  • An associate degree (or higher) in science, engineering, or a related technical field.
  • An interest in learning about intelligent transportation systems and using these systems to improve people's quality of life.
  • Experience with GIS, AutoCad, MicroStation, or related engineering software.
