Construction Cost Engineer

The Construction Cost Engineer is responsible for supporting project teams in controlling and managing various costs on heavy civil and transportation construction projects. This role works closely with the Project Manager in all aspects of construction and management of the project. The Construction Cost Engineer is expected to have a working knowledge of the scope of work and various cost documentation involved in managing project costs including job cost reports, change orders, invoices, and purchase orders.

What a Construction Cost Engineer does:
  • Inputs or updates budget information, expenditure information, and forecasts in the cost reporting system(s)
  • Develops and processes budgets, purchase orders, change orders, and client invoices in the accounting system
  • Monitors and reconciles project cost reports
  • Prepares project forecasts based on extensive knowledge of the ongoing construction as well as input from other members of the project team
  • Identifies potential cost overruns and reforecasts over-expended accounts.
  • Advises Project Managers on appropriate job set-ups to facilitate management of financial performance and schedules
  • Assists Project Manager in preparation and submittal of spreadsheets and a wide variety of routine cost analysis, including cash flow, Estimate at Completion, Work in Progress, and other cost related evaluations
  • Tracks extra work, including extending daily Time & Material bills and processing PCOs (potential change orders) thru approved change orders
  • Other project controls duties as assigned
  • Other project support functions such as cost estimating, productivity tracking and improvement, procurement, and construction quality control as needed

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • 3 - 5 years of heavy civil construction experience or similar construction cost experience or equivalent combinations of training and related experience
  • Working knowledge of and ability to select/apply and control techniques i.e., cost accounting, budget analysis, etc. as well as an understanding of the nature of process systems, structures and construction technology required
  • Knowledge of Viewpoint, HCSS, or Hard Dollar systems preferred
  • Commitment to safety and quality and knowledge of construction safety
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Good attention to detail, with the ability to recognize discrepancies
  • Strong work ethic - highly motivated and willing to do what it takes to get the job done right.
  • The ability to work independently as well as part of a team
