Training Coordinator

Abilities First, Inc., a CQL accredited organization, has been making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities for over fifty years. Starting out as The Little Red School House in 1962, Abilities First, Inc. has evolved into the Hudson Valley's premiere provider of support services for individuals with developmental disabilities. We offer a wide variety of services including school and preschool programs, day habilitation, residential habilitation, community habilitation, and employment services.

The Training Coordinator is responsible for monitoring overall service provision throughout Abilities First's children and adult programs in accordance with Abilities First's Philosophy and Policy, our Corporate Compliance Plan, and the various State Oversight Agencies that monitor Abilities First. The Primary focus of the Training Coordinator in this position is implementation of our agency wide training program to meet both regulatory training requirements and foster employee's professional development. The Training Coordinator is responsible for providing program staff with training, guidance, and technical support as needed or requested to carry our mission forth.

Some of the Training Coordinator's responsibilities will include:

  • Maintains knowledge of required trainings per OPWDD, NYSED, OCFS and other state oversight agencies, developing a training plan/curriculum that meets programs needs to fulfill both regulatory requirements and additional training that adds value.
  • Teaches designated curriculum topics to new and/or existing employees, either during orientation or during required refreshers, school conference days, etc.
  • Utilizes our learning management system to create content and make training opportunities available to staff via technology when at all possible, in collaboration with the Information Systems Specialist.
  • Provide training to appropriate staff as identified as necessary in routine monitoring of program sites or at supervisor's request.
  • Coordinates other agency trainers to participate in orientation, recertification/refresher trainings.
  • Assists with notifications to management of training deadlines / employees out of compliance.
  • Identifies and offers employee development opportunities to enrich employee experience and quality of services at Abilities first
  • Makes recommendations to supervisor on other training opportunities to educate staff and enrich the lives of those we support.
  • Ensure training opportunities are available to staff during their scheduled work shifts and locations, where necessary.

This is a full-time management position, salaried, Monday through Friday, primarily day shift with the need to occasionally train outside of standard hours.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Services, education or related field required. Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities highly preferred. A combination of education and experience, which in the view of the direct supervisor qualifies the candidate may be deemed acceptable.
  • Current CPR and SFA instructor certification; SCIP-R highly preferred
  • Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication, and computer skills.
  • Must have a current NYS driver's license, free of moving violations (Amendable to Class E); deemed acceptable by our insurance carrier.
  • Requires some local travel (mileage reimbursed) and the ability to be flexible with work hours to provide training at non-traditional times when necessary
