Accounting and Payroll Specialist

Bristol Wave Seafoods, LLC (BWS) currently operates nine freezer longline catcher vessels, primarily in the Bering Sea, and has been in business for over thirty years. BWS operates in certified sustainable fisheries using gear (primarily hook-and-line, with limited pot fishing on some vessels) that minimizes damage to the ocean floor. BWS sells its harvest, primarily Pacific cod, black cod (sablefish) and Greenland turbot, to customers all over the world.

BWS seeks a new employee, reporting to the Controller, who will take responsibility for:

  • Processing payroll for fishermen and shoreside employees (weekly) and office personnel (biweekly), including all quarterly and annual filing requirements (current third-party payroll provider is Paylocity).
  • Maintaining security and confidentiality of payroll records.
  • Assist other members of the accounting team with data entry, account reconciliations and filing projects as necessary to maintain a smooth workflow.

Working Environment

BWS runs a small, dynamic office near Seattle Pacific University and the Ship Canal hiking/biking trail, with twenty-three employees (and sometimes a dog or two). Our fishing crews work around the clock, every day, during the fishing seasons. Our office is normally open from 9AM to 5PM on weekdays. However, our staff supports the crew by working as needed to process crew compensation, sell the products they harvest, and pay bills to keep our vessels operating. We recognize that without the successful efforts of our fishing crews and support for maintenance and operation of our vessels, that we would have no business. As a result, our office environment is casual, sometimes chaotic, every now and then a bit slow, but always responsive to the needs of our operations. We are a fishing company run by fishermen. Preferred/Helpful Skills and Experience

  • Prior experience with payroll processing and/or familiarity with Paylocity software
  • Accounting department experience (e.g., preparation and/or posting of journal entries)
  • High level of familiarity with Microsoft Office, especially Excel

Physical Requirements

  • Office environment, primarily working on a computer at a desk
  • Able to carry a fifty pound box up or down a flight of stairs as needed
