The Transportation Inspection Team Lead plans, schedules, coordinates and/or supervises field construction activities on assigned road construction projects. Must maintain positive working relationships with project engineers, contractors, subconsultants, City/County, and KDOT or FHWA staff. Must adhere to quality assurance and safety standards and ensure that schedules and budgets are met. Required to maintain accurate progress reports in accordance with project requirements. Will provide inspection of construction activity to ensure the quality of construction and compliance with project plans, contracts, specifications, and special provisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage business development efforts for the Transportation Inspection Team(s). Strategically target projects or clients for business development. Business development efforts must work closely with Firm's Strategic Plan, Purpose and Vision.
  • Provide leadership for the Team(s) including operations as risk and financial management, customer service, and client management.
  • Provide input to the Division Manager regarding staff recruitment, mentoring and training, performance issues, staff appraisals, compensation, and staff reductions.
  • Monitor and assist with renewal requirements for Team's KDOT CITT, ACI Concrete and other certifications.
  • Understand how technology is used within the Division and their team while encouraging staff to find innovative ways to use technology to increase productivity, reduce costs, and communicating your Team's technology needs and expectations to the Division Manager.
  • Serve as a construction project manager for transportation projects by managing and overseeing construction of roads, highways and bridges, and review work to assure quality construction outcomes, daily/weekly documentation and proper project close-out documentation and procedures are being met.
  • Review, inspect, report and photo document, test and/or measure the work of the contractors and consultants to ensure that work is performed in accordance with the contract requirements, applicable construction standards and regulations necessary for completion and to reduce risk of project/contract issues escalating into problems or claims.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current Professional Engineer license desirable but not required.
  • Proficiency with the KDOT CMS project documentation process from project initiation to closeout.
  • Basic knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations relating to construction, inspection, safety and traffic control; considerable knowledge of public works inspection methods.
  • Must possess a demonstrated ability to prioritize work, meet deadlines and maintain attention to accuracy and detail.
  • Must possess the ability to manage a staff and direct their efficient utilization on projects.
  • Must meet internal requirements for operation of company vehicles throughout duration of employment and must maintain a valid driver's license and insurable driving record.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to job sites, sometimes for extended periods. Job sites may be located throughout Kansas or adjacent states.
