Prep Cook/Training Assistant

Stone Soup PDX is a non-profit food service training enterprise creating employment opportunities for people who are experiencing barriers to employment, stemming from difficulties such as incarceration history, addiction, homelessness and various other types of trauma.  Stone Soup supports the reintegration of these communities into the workforce through on-the-job training that will provide them the skills necessary to find a job in the hospitality industry. We are a social enterprise that offers meals to those living in Multnomah County shelters, take out, delivery, and event catering experiences open to the public.

BENEFITS:
  • Full time, 4 x 9hr days/week (approximately 35 hours/week)
  • Monday-Friday 8-5pm hours with some weekend/nighttime catering
  • $15/hr starting wage plus tips

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

Cooking:

  • Responsible for preparing and execution of shelter meal production and catering menus

Instruction:

  • Assist participants to meet training competencies.

Other Duties:

  • Responsible for kitchen cleanliness and organization.

Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent.
  • Formal culinary training or equivalent (preferred)
  • 1-3 years of kitchen experience.
  • A demonstrated teaching style reflecting compassion, patience, and integrity.
  • Experience and commitment teaching people who are experiencing barriers to employment.
  • Strong communication skills, in both verbal and written forms.
  • Ability to maintain an effective learning environment to keep instruction on track in the classroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to be part of a training and organizational team.
About Stone Soup PDX
Program participants progress through a 12-week training program, learning basic hygiene and food safety to essential culinary skills, moving from the daytime lunch counter to the evening fine-dining catering hall. Participants get practical experience working at the counter, prepping and cooking food in the kitchen, washing dishes, life skills and developing their customer service skills,  After completion of the training program, Stone Soup links participants with our network of restaurants, cafes, and caterers to provide job interviews and placement services.
